Mortal Kombat 1: How to Join the Open Beta

The Open Beta for Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for those who have pre-ordered the game. Here’s how to join the bloodshed for this upcoming title.

For the weekend of August 18th-23rd 2023, Mortal Kombat 1 is offering an open beta for many people to join and test the game’s servers before its official launch in September. Featuring a cast of main roster characters and new assist Kameos, now is the perfect time to jump into fights early. Available only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, PC users will have to wait to get their hands on the newest title in the series.

There will be six characters and four Kameo fighters seen in the Open Beta, representing the new systems seen within Mortal Kombat 1. The roster includes Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Kenshi, Johnny Cage, and Li Mei with Kameos Jax, Frost, Kano, and Sonya Blade. The combination of characters seen in the Beta only scratches the surface of the confirmed warriors that have been announced.

To gain a code into the Mortal Kombat 1 Open Beta, simply pre-order any version of the game digitally on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The official time when Beta codes are supposed to be sent to appropriate accounts is at 8am PST on August 18th. The Beta can then be downloaded using the code, but it will shut down on August 21st likely around the same time toward the beginning of the day.

There have been reports of those who have failed to receive an Open Beta code after pre-ordering the game. If this happens to you, simply wait 30 minutes after your purchase for the scheduled code to be sent to your account.

When you start the Beta, you will have the chance to play 1v1 online matches or participate in single-player Klassic Towers. The Towers are a series of battles against AI-controlled opponents, allowing you to test your abilities and Mortal Kombat 1‘s new mechanics. With no Training Mode in the Open Beta, the Towers are a great opportunity to figure out what characters do before challenging others online.

There are other benefits to pre-ordering this fighting game beyond getting into the Open Beta. An iconic character, Shang-Tsung, is only available as a pre-order bonus for those who are certain to enjoy the game when it fully releases. Those that join the Open Beta have the opportunity to play an exclusive fighter that could be just as exciting as the guest characters coming in Kombat Pack 1 of Mortal Kombat 1.
