Nintendo has officially released the newest system update for the Switch, with the small console update making minor fixes and improvements to the handheld-home console hybrid. Since the console’s debut in 2017, Nintendo has regularly rolled out updates for the Switch, both improving its stability as well as addressing exploits with the console. While Nintendo has occasionally added major features like game folders, most updates have been minor improvements to the console’s functionality. Now, Nintendo has shipped the newest update to the console.

The newest Switch update comes in the middle of a year that has seen a plethora of major releases for the Nintendo platform. Several first-party franchises have received new games already throughout 2023, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launching in May and Pikmin 4 releasing last month. The latter half of the year also has multiple high-profile titles on the way with Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Super Mario RPG Remake releasing in October and November, respectively. Now, fans have been treated to a new minor update to the console.

Nintendo would officially announce the release of the Version 16.1.0 update, with the newest fix making minor adjustments to the console. Patch notes revealed by Nintendo would confirm the newest fix makes small changes to the Switch, only reportedly making “general system stability improvements.” Minor updates like these have become common for many of Nintendo’s consoles in later years, often addressing exploits used to hack Nintendo devices. While Nintendo’s newest update isn’t likely to excite many fans, leaks have suggested the developer is already hard at work on the Switch’s successor. Several rumors have suggested Nintendo’s next console could launch in 2024, citing declining sales for the Nintendo Switch. Rumors have suggested the console may use cartridges similarly to the Switch, though backwards compatibility with the current console has not been confirmed. Nintendo itself has also hinted at plans to avoid the shortages that have plagued recent console releases with the launch of its next console.

Though no official confirmation has been given about Nintendo’s newest console, the developer is setting itself up to send the Switch off with a bang. Alongside the previously mentioned Mario games, Pokemon is also set to see several major releases with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s DLC launching next month and Detective Pikachu Returns in October. Multiple popular third-party series will also be coming to Switch with Persona and Metal Gear Solid among the franchises included. The Switch’s newest minor update will likely be one of many similar fixes as the beloved console approaches the end of its lifespan.
