An Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S mid-generation refresh is not in the works, as Microsoft is focusing on the currently available hardware to let developers get the most out of it.
Speaking with IGN during Gamescom 2023, the Xbox head confirmed the company is only working on the increased storage Xbox Series S, and no mid-gen refresh is in the works. Spencer feels they are kind of at the end of the beginning of the current generation, and they need to let developers settle on the current hardware and get the most out of it.
Elaborating further on the lack of an Xbox Series X | S mid-gen refresh, Phil Spencer added that, looking at what happens on high-end PC, it isn’t just about pixel count or resolution but also about lighting techniques and other things that make a game look and feel great. As such, he feels the industry has a ton of headroom in there, suggesting we still haven’t seen everything the current generation consoles are capable of doing yet.
Microsoft may not be working on a mid-gen refresh, but, according to rumors, it still looking into releasing new hardware, such as an Xbox Series X without the disc drive and other unspecified hardware that will supposedly be released sometime in 2025.
