Sometimes, a second chance is all it takes to transform a disappointment into a delight. That’s exactly what Lexus has achieved with the 2026 RZ 550e F Sport, a refined and revitalized version of its first battery electric vehicle that left many critics, including myself, underwhelmed in its initial debut.

When I first drove the original Lexus RZ in 2023, I found it lacking—poor EV range, a bumpy ride, and an overall experience that felt more like a compliance car than a genuine contender in the EV space. In fact, I compared it unfavorably to the notoriously underwhelming VinFast VF8. But Lexus listened, learned, and delivered a comprehensive overhaul for the 2026 model year. With new motors, a larger battery, improved charging capabilities, and a sportier F Sport trim, the RZ 550e is now a compelling electric SUV that has won me over.

New Battery, New Motors, New Attitude

The heart of the 2026 RZ 550e is its upgraded 77 kWh battery, which powers dual permanent magnet synchronous motors—one on each axle—delivering a combined 402 horsepower (300 kW). The inclusion of silicon carbide electronics in the motors improves efficiency and performance, while new body stiffening and added sound dampening enhance the driving experience.

As an F Sport model, the 550e also gets a visual and aerodynamic upgrade. New bumpers, a redesigned front grille, a rear spoiler, and 20-inch wheels with aero covers give the car a more aggressive and purposeful stance. The blue-painted brake calipers peeking through the wheels are a nice touch, hinting at the car’s sporty intentions.

Performance and Range: A Mixed Bag

While the RZ 550e’s performance is impressive—accelerating with authority and handling corners with confidence—its range remains a sticking point. At just 229 miles (369 km) under optimal conditions, it falls short of many competitors in the segment. In real-world driving during a chilly February week, the car averaged 2.5 miles per kWh, and with the battery at 50% charge, the estimated range dropped to a concerning 88 miles (142 km).

That said, the RZ 550e does offer some redeeming features in this area. AC charging now maxes out at 11 kW (up from 7 kW), and with its new NACS port, the car can DC fast-charge from 10% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes, according to Lexus. This makes road trips more feasible, even if the base range isn’t class-leading.

Design and Interior: Lexus Elegance, Evolved

The RZ 550e’s design is a study in understated elegance. At 189 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, and 64.4 inches tall, it’s a relatively compact SUV that feels planted and purposeful on the road. The F Sport trim adds a layer of aggression with its aero elements, including two distinctive rear spoilers that give the car a subtle Batmobile vibe.

Inside, the cabin is a showcase of Lexus’ commitment to luxury and technology. High-quality materials, a driver-focused layout, and the latest infotainment system create an environment that’s both comfortable and cutting-edge. The seats are supportive, the driving position is excellent, and the overall fit and finish are on par with what you’d expect from a premium brand.

Driving Dynamics: Where the RZ Shines

Despite my initial reservations, the 2026 RZ 550e F Sport impressed me with its driving dynamics. The electric motors deliver smooth, instant torque, and the all-wheel-drive system provides confidence in a variety of conditions. The steering is precise, the suspension strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness, and the overall driving experience feels more polished than its predecessor.

There’s a sense of refinement here that’s hard to ignore. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or navigating city streets, the RZ 550e feels composed and capable. It’s not a sports car, but it’s certainly more engaging to drive than I expected.

The Verdict: A Worthy Contender

The 2026 Lexus RZ 550e F Sport is a significant improvement over its predecessor, addressing many of the criticisms that plagued the original model. While its range still lags behind some competitors, its performance, design, and overall refinement make it a compelling option for those in the market for a premium electric SUV.

Lexus has clearly put in the work to make the RZ a car that can stand toe-to-toe with the best in the segment. It may not be perfect, but it’s a far cry from the disappointment I drove in 2023. For Lexus, this is a redemption story worth celebrating—and for EV enthusiasts, it’s a sign that the brand is serious about competing in the electric future.
