Apple may be inspiring Samsung to go back to a feature it dropped in 2020
Apple is widely rumored to be introducing variable aperture on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this year, and Samsung is apparently paying very close attention to iPhone-related rumors. That’s because the Korean company is now said to be considering re-adding the feature to its lineup as well.
The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 both had variable aperture main cameras, but the feature was dropped with the Galaxy S20 generation in 2020. If Samsung does adopt it again, then expect to see it on the Galaxy S27 family next year, so after a seven-year hiatus.
It’s quite interesting how companies like Samsung can come up with an innovation, use it for a couple of years or so, then drop it and totally forget about it until Apple introduces its own version – or, in this case, is rumored to.
Apparently Samsung still hasn’t fully decided whether to use dual aperture in its upcoming devices, but is actively considering it, having allegedly requested the development of variable aperture from its partners, and both Samsung Electro-Mechanics and MCNEX are producing variable aperture samples and supplying them to Samsung Electronics for further evaluation.
