Elon Musk’s xAI Faces Massive Exodus as Co-Founders and Engineers Depart Amid Controversy

In a stunning turn of events, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, is grappling with a wave of high-profile departures that has sent shockwaves through the tech industry. The latest exodus includes six out of the original 12 co-founders, with two more exiting this week, raising questions about the company’s internal dynamics and future trajectory.

During an all-hands meeting on Tuesday night, Musk addressed the departures, framing them as a natural part of scaling the company. “Because we’ve reached a certain scale, we’re organizing the company to be more effective at this scale,” Musk said, according to The New York Times. “And actually, when this happens, there’s some people who are better suited for the early stages of a company and less suited for the later stages.”

However, Musk’s tone shifted on Wednesday when he took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that the departures were not voluntary. “xAI was reorganized a few days ago to improve speed of execution,” Musk wrote. “As a company grows, especially as quickly as xAI, the structure must evolve just like any living organism. This unfortunately required parting ways with some people.”

Musk’s comments come as xAI faces mounting challenges, including regulatory scrutiny over Grok, the company’s AI chatbot, which has been accused of creating nonconsensual explicit deepfakes of women and children. French authorities recently raided X offices as part of an investigation into the matter. Additionally, xAI is preparing for a planned IPO later this year following its legal acquisition by SpaceX last week.

The departures have sparked speculation about the reasons behind the exodus. While Musk insists the reorganization was necessary for scaling, the fact that several engineers followed the co-founders out the door suggests deeper tensions within the company. At least three former xAI employees are now reportedly starting a new venture together, though details remain scarce.

Among the notable departures are Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, an xAI co-founder and reasoning lead, and Shayan Salehian, who worked on product infrastructure and model behavior post-training. Wu announced his resignation in a post on X, stating, “It’s time for my next chapter. It is an era with full possibilities: a small team armed with AIs can move mountains and redefine what’s possible.”

Salehian, who previously worked at Twitter/X, expressed gratitude for his time at xAI, writing, “xAI is truly an extraordinary place. The team is incredibly hardcore and talented, shipping at a pace that shouldn’t be possible.”

Other departing employees, such as Vahid Kazemi and Roland Gavrilescu, have hinted at a desire for more autonomy and smaller teams to build frontier tech more rapidly. Kazemi, who left a few weeks ago, wrote, “IMO, all AI labs are building the exact same thing, and it’s boring … So, I’m starting something new.”

The exodus comes at a critical juncture for xAI, which employs over 1,000 people. While the departures are unlikely to affect the company’s short-term capabilities, they raise questions about its ability to retain top talent in a highly competitive industry. xAI faces stiff competition from rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, all vying for dominance in the AI space.

Musk’s comments about hiring aggressively and his pitch to potential recruits—”Join xAI if the idea of mass drivers on the Moon appeals to you”—suggest the company is doubling down on its ambitious vision. However, the rapid pace of the departures has taken on a life of its own online, with users jokingly announcing on X that they too are “leaving xAI” despite never having worked there.

As xAI navigates this turbulent period, the tech world will be watching closely to see how the company adapts and whether it can maintain its momentum in the face of internal and external challenges.
