Two more xAI co-founders are among those leaving after the SpaceX merger
The Great Exodus: xAI Founders Flee as Musk’s Moonshot Vision Crumbles
In a stunning series of events that has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, multiple co-founders of Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI have abruptly departed, just days after the company’s historic merger with SpaceX and social media platform X, valued at a staggering $1.25 trillion—the largest merger in corporate history.
The departures began when Yuhai “Tony” Wu, one of xAI’s original co-founders, took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his exit, cryptically stating it was “time for [his] next chapter.” Hours later, Jimmy Ba, another founding member, posted his own farewell message, saying it was “time to recalibrate [his] gradient on the big picture.” The exodus has left xAI with only half of its original 12 co-founders still on staff, according to Reuters.
The timing of these departures is particularly noteworthy, coming just days after Musk unveiled his ambitious plans for the newly merged entity. In a company update, Musk outlined a vision that would combine “space-based AI” data centers with vertical integration across AI, rockets, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile device communications, and what he called “the world’s foremost real-time information and free speech platform.”
But sources familiar with internal discussions suggest the vision went even further. During an all-hands meeting that was later leaked online, Musk reportedly discussed plans to establish an AI satellite factory on the moon, complete with a lunar city. The proposal, which many employees found fantastical at best, was met with skepticism from both internal and external observers.
The reorganization that followed appears to have been the final straw for several key personnel. In a post on X, Musk acknowledged that “xAI was reorganized a few days ago to improve speed of execution” and that the process “unfortunately required parting ways with some people.” He then issued a call for new talent to join the company.
During the 45-minute internal meeting, Musk outlined the company’s new structure, which would be organized into four main application areas: Grok Main and Voice, Coding, Imagine (for image and video), and Macrohard—a division Musk described as intended to “do full digital emulation of entire companies.”
The departures have raised questions about the sustainability of Musk’s grand vision. Industry analysts note that the combination of AI, space exploration, and social media represents an unprecedented challenge, even for a company with Musk’s track record. “This level of vertical integration across such disparate industries is unprecedented,” said one tech industry analyst who requested anonymity. “The fact that multiple co-founders are leaving suggests there may be fundamental disagreements about the company’s direction.”
What makes this situation particularly intriguing is that several departing executives have already announced plans to launch their own AI companies. This suggests that rather than abandoning the AI field entirely, these founders are choosing to pursue their vision outside of Musk’s orbit.
The timing is also significant given the current state of the AI industry, which is experiencing both explosive growth and intense scrutiny. With regulatory pressure mounting and competition heating up, the decisions of these experienced AI professionals to strike out on their own could signal a shift in the industry’s landscape.
As xAI moves forward with its reorganization, the tech world watches with bated breath to see whether Musk’s vision of space-based AI data centers and lunar manufacturing facilities will become reality or join the long list of ambitious tech projects that never quite materialized. One thing is certain: the AI industry has never been more dynamic, and the next chapter in this story promises to be as dramatic as the last.
