Bloodlines 2’s Valentine’s patch adds further customisation options and lootable blood bags, because nothing says ‘I love you’ like the vampire equivalent of a ready meal
Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines 2 Gets Valentine’s Day Loot Update, But Is It Enough to Win Back Fans?
Vampire: The Masquerade—Bloodlines 2 may not have been the blockbuster success that Paradox Interactive was hoping for, but the publisher has doubled down on its commitment to the troubled sequel. The Chinese Room, the game’s developer, has been steadily releasing updates since launch, with the latest one arriving just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The update introduces a new feature that allows rooftop-dwelling vampires and ghouls to carry useful items such as restorative elixirs and newly introduced blood bags. These can be either pickpocketed from unsuspecting foes or scavenged from their corpses after a brutal fight. While this change is designed to make rooftop encounters more rewarding, it doesn’t exactly scream Valentine’s Day. Even for an undead creature of the night, showing up to your lover’s coffin with a stolen blood bag is a bit like bringing a wilting bouquet of flowers from the gas station.
On the plus side, the update also adds several new character customization options. This includes the addition of facial hair for Phyre, the game’s protagonist, as well as seven new accessories such as a beret and an eyepatch, eight more makeup choices, seven additional hairstyles, and four extra eye colors. According to Paradox, Bloodlines 2’s customization options now amount to 151 items and 24 outfits, giving players plenty of ways to hone their look while wandering around Seattle.
However, the question remains: is this enough to entice players back into the game? Honestly, it’s doubtful. While Bloodlines 2 has its merits, as explained in Fraser Brown’s review, most of those merits revolve around Phyre and their relationship with Fabien, the Malkavian detective who lives in their brain. What players really want is more engaging content in the world, not just a bunch of side adventures with the B-team.
That said, Paradox has plans to release two DLCs later in 2026. The first will let players take on the role of Benny, the deeply unpleasant vampire Sheriff encountered early in the game. The second centers around Ysabella, the glamorous Toreador who owns the Atrium nightclub. These additions could potentially add more depth and intrigue to the game, but only time will tell if they’re enough to win back fans.
In the meantime, kudos to Paradox for standing by the game and continuing to support it with updates and new content. While it may not have been the success they hoped for, their commitment to Bloodlines 2 shows that they’re willing to learn from their mistakes and keep trying to make the game better.
