  • In a best-case scenario with limited greenhouse gas emissions, Greenland’s coastline could gain about 0.9 meters (3 feet) of new land as sea levels fall.
  • In a worst-case scenario with unchecked emissions, the land could rise by as much as 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) out of the ocean.

This means that while Miami and Jakarta face inundation, Greenland’s shores could expand—offering both opportunities and challenges for its coastal communities.

Why Gravity Matters

The phenomenon is driven by more than just melting ice. Greenland’s ice sheet is so massive that it actually pulls the ocean toward it, raising local sea levels. As the ice disappears, this gravitational effect weakens, and the sea surface drops. Combined with the land rising as the weight of the ice lifts, the result is a dramatic fall in relative sea level.
