Nintendo announces surprise Switch 2 version of sci-fi RPG Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Gets Massive Switch 2 Boost — But There’s a Catch
The Nintendo Switch 2’s library is already growing fast, but one of the most technically demanding titles from the original Switch’s lineup just got a serious upgrade — and longtime fans aren’t exactly thrilled about the price tag.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition has arrived, bringing buttery-smooth 60fps performance and 4K resolution when docked to a TV. For a game that pushed the original Switch hardware to its absolute limits, this update is a godsend — but it comes at a cost.
A Long-Awaited Upgrade for a Wii U Classic
Originally released in 2015 on the ill-fated Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X was widely regarded as one of the most ambitious RPGs of its generation. Its sprawling open world, seamless exploration, and massive scale made it a technical marvel — but also a hardware headache on the original Switch.
The 2025 “Definitive Edition” already gave the game a visual overhaul and quality-of-life improvements, but performance still suffered in certain areas. Now, with the Switch 2’s upgraded hardware, Monolith Soft has delivered the optimization fans have been craving.
The Catch: You’re Paying Twice
Here’s where things get controversial. If you already own Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on Switch, you don’t get the 60fps/4K upgrade for free. Instead, Nintendo is offering a $5 upgrade pack on the eShop — which, while not exorbitant, still feels like nickel-and-diming given the game’s age.
If you don’t own the game at all, the Switch 2 version costs $65 (physical copies arrive April 16). That’s $5 more than the standard Switch version, which retails for $60.
For context, other major Switch 2 upgrades — like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey — included free performance boosts for existing owners. Nintendo’s decision to charge even a small fee for Xenoblade Chronicles X has already sparked debate in gaming circles.
What Makes Xenoblade Chronicles X Special?
Unlike other entries in the Xenoblade series, X leans heavily into hard sci-fi territory. Set on the alien planet Mira, the game emphasizes exploration, side quests, and a completely seamless open world — no loading screens between zones.
And then there’s the mech gameplay. Yes, you can eventually pilot a giant Skell mech and fly across the entire planet — a feature that remains one of the most exhilarating in JRPG history.
The combat system blends real-time action with MMO-style mechanics, which can take some getting used to but rewards mastery with deeply satisfying battles.
The Bigger Picture: Xenoblade on Switch 2
Xenoblade Chronicles X is the last of the series’ Switch ports to receive a Switch 2 upgrade. The other entries — Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 — are still running at their original performance levels.
Given the technical improvements already seen in X‘s update, fans are hopeful Nintendo will roll out similar patches for the other games. Until then, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition stands as both a technical showcase and a reminder of the series’ ambitious roots.
