ChatGPT’s first hardware may look familiar

OpenAI’s First ChatGPT Hardware: A Smart Speaker That Might Just Collect Dust

When the tech world first caught wind that legendary Apple designer Jony Ive was teaming up with OpenAI to create the first dedicated ChatGPT hardware device, imaginations went into overdrive. The whispers were tantalizing—no screens, a pocket-sized “pebble,” a “third-core” gadget that would be “contextually aware” of its environment. The hype was real, the expectations sky-high.

Then came the leaks. A reported OpenAI conference call had CEO Sam Altman calling the device the “coolest piece of technology the world will have ever seen,” while Ive himself heralded it as the dawn of a “new design movement.” The stage was set for a revolution in how we interact with AI—something beyond the confines of our phones and laptops, something that would seamlessly blend into our lives.

But now, a new report from The Information suggests that the first ChatGPT hardware might be something far more pedestrian: a smart speaker. Yes, the same category dominated by Amazon Echo and Google Nest devices. According to anonymous sources, this speaker would come with a built-in camera, a price tag between $200 and $300, and possibly not even ship until February 2027. Other rumored devices in the pipeline include smart glasses (not expected until 2028 or later) and—get this—a smart lamp.

Let’s unpack this. OpenAI, the company that brought us the conversational AI that can write essays, debug code, and even compose poetry, is apparently gearing up to release a glorified Echo speaker. The inclusion of a camera is intriguing, perhaps hinting at visual AI features, but the overall picture is underwhelming.

Personally, I already have an AI-powered smart display in my kitchen—the Google Nest Hub Max with Gemini—and it mostly just sits there, cycling through family photos. The Alexa+-enabled Echo Dot in my office is even less inspiring, often left silent and unused. The truth is, I haven’t found many compelling uses for AI in a smart speaker. Conversations tend to be stilted, halting, or just plain weird. ChatGPT has been a revelation on my desktop, but in a smart speaker? I’m skeptical.

The rumored ChatGPT smart glasses would be a step closer to the vision of an always-on, context-aware device, but OpenAI is wading into waters already well-charted by Meta and possibly even Apple. A ChatGPT smart lamp? Now that’s a curveball—there have been smart lights with integrated speakers before, but nothing quite like this.

I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment. After all the hype and anticipation, the prospect of a ChatGPT-powered smart speaker feels like a letdown. I’ll be waiting for that mythical “pebble” instead—the device that truly reimagines how we interact with AI.

Of course, as with any report based on anonymous sources, this should be taken with a grain of salt. OpenAI has yet to comment on The Information‘s story, and the timeline is still years out. But if this is the direction OpenAI is heading, it might be time to temper our expectations.
