Anker’s powerful home theater on wheels is pure chaos
Anker’s Nebula X1 Pro: A $4,999 Projector That’s Too Loud to Be Real
In a world where portable projectors are getting smaller and more affordable, Anker’s Soundcore Nebula X1 Pro arrives like a sledgehammer to a thumbtack convention. This isn’t just a projector—it’s a 72-pound, five-speaker, Google TV-equipped, liquid-cooled beast that somehow crams a 4K laser projector and a full Dolby Atmos surround system into a single, wheeled monstrosity.
The Sound That Defies Physics
The Nebula X1 Pro doesn’t just have good sound—it has too much sound. The 400W audio system includes a thumpy subwoofer capable of wall-shaking bass, four battery-powered speakers that automatically unfold like mechanical wings, and a 4-mic array that calibrates audio to your room’s acoustics. The result? A 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos experience that can make helicopters in Top Gun: Maverick feel like they’re actually flying overhead.
But here’s the thing: at 30% volume, your walls are already shaking. At 50%, you’re competing with construction equipment. And at 70%? Your neighbors are definitely calling the cops. It’s the first projector I’ve reviewed where “too loud” is actually a legitimate complaint.
Portable-ish
Anker calls it portable, and technically, it is—if your definition of portable includes something that requires two people to lift, won’t survive a trip over cobblestones, and needs its own electric wagon for transport. The telescoping handle and wheels help, but let’s be real: this is “portable” in the same way a grand piano is portable.
The IP43 water resistance only applies when everything is closed up tight—which, let’s face it, defeats the entire purpose of owning this thing. You’re buying this to party, not to keep it in bubble wrap.
The Good, The Bad, and The Absurd
The Good:
- Complete home theater on wheels
- Bright, vivid 4K picture
- Wireless Dolby Atmos surround that actually works
- Bass that could rattle fillings loose
- Doubles as a Bluetooth speaker when you want silence
The Bad:
- $4,999 price tag (yes, really)
- “Portable” is generous
- Occasional Wi-Fi connectivity issues
- Might get you evicted from your apartment building
Should You Buy It?
Look, as a gadget nerd, I’m super enthusiastic about the Nebula X1 Pro. There’s nothing else like it on the market, and I appreciate Anker’s audacity to build it. But for my money, if you need a portable 4K projector, then the regular Nebula X1 with optional speaker kit is plenty loud even outdoors, and it’ll save you about $1,000.
But if you gotta have that bass? If you want to host outdoor movie nights where the audio is so powerful it could be classified as a weapon? If you have $5,000 burning a hole in your pocket and a death wish for your relationships with neighbors? Then the Soundcore Nebula X1 Pro won’t disappoint.
Just maybe invest in some soundproofing first.
