Markiplier says Hollywood was ‘willfully ignoring the potential of YouTubers’ before his film Iron Lung made $50 million at the box office
Iron Lung: Markiplier’s Indie Horror Film Shatters Expectations, Grosses $50 Million on a Shoestring Budget
In a stunning display of independent filmmaking, YouTuber and content creator Markiplier has taken Hollywood by storm with his horror film adaptation of the indie video game Iron Lung. The film, which premiered in February, has not only defied industry norms but has also grossed an astonishing $50 million at the box office—on a budget of just “a little over” $4 million. This remarkable feat has sparked conversations about the evolving landscape of filmmaking and the growing influence of digital creators in traditional media.
From YouTube to Theaters: A Bold Experiment
Iron Lung is based on the 2022 indie horror game of the same name, developed by David Szymanski. Markiplier, who starred in, directed, and distributed the film, initially planned a limited release in about 60 theaters across the United States. However, a passionate fan campaign propelled the film into over 4,000 theaters worldwide, making it a global phenomenon.
The film’s success is particularly noteworthy because it was produced and distributed outside the traditional Hollywood system. Markiplier, known for his YouTube channel with over 35 million subscribers, leveraged his massive online following to bring Iron Lung to the big screen. This unconventional approach has not only proven the power of digital creators but has also challenged the status quo of the film industry.
Mixed Reviews, Unanimous Impact
While reviews for Iron Lung have been mixed, they generally lean positive. Critics have praised the film’s atmospheric tension, innovative storytelling, and Markiplier’s commitment to the project. However, some have noted that the film’s low-budget origins occasionally show through in its production values.
Despite the mixed critical reception, the film’s financial success speaks volumes. Grossing $50 million on a $4 million budget is a feat that even seasoned Hollywood filmmakers would envy. This achievement has caught the attention of studios and executives, many of whom are now eager to understand how Markiplier pulled off such a remarkable feat.
Hollywood’s Changing Attitude
Appearing on the Lemonade Stand podcast, Markiplier revealed that he had not received much interest from production companies or studios before the release of Iron Lung. “There might have been, but nothing really stands out, because even though it was a large project, it was still a YouTube project. There is that level of respect that I just haven’t met yet,” he said.
Markiplier also noted that Hollywood had been “willfully ignoring” the potential of YouTubers and digital creators. However, the success of Iron Lung has begun to shift this attitude. “There is a bit of a shift here. I’ve had a couple of meetings with some studios, some executives, some key people in [film] world, and they’re all asking me the same thing: ‘How’d you do it? How’d you do it?'” he shared.
The Future of Filmmaking
Markiplier believes that Iron Lung’s success has introduced much-needed competition to the film industry. “They see money, they can see the threat that’s there, they see that if people can make this independently, that means less of the pie is available,” he said. “And I think that’s good. They need some competition. They need a kick in the ass.”
As for his next project, Markiplier is considering other video game adaptations but is cautious about being pigeonholed. “There is a trap there, right? If I only do game adaptations, then I become the games guy. And especially if I do horror game adaptations, I become that,” he explained. “I feel like I could probably do another game adaptation next and that’d be fine. But if the next one isn’t an original idea, then I am hindering myself as an artist.”
A New Era for Digital Creators
Iron Lung’s success marks a turning point for digital creators in the entertainment industry. It demonstrates that YouTubers and online influencers are not just entertainers but also capable filmmakers who can compete with—and even outperform—traditional Hollywood productions. As Markiplier continues to push boundaries, the film industry may find itself adapting to a new era where digital creators are not just participants but leaders.
