EDISON, NJ – On Thursday, Comcast went live, providing internet services to residents of Edison.
One of Mayor Sam Joshi’s election platforms was to provide Edison with better internet access and end the monopoly of Optimum.
Last year, the township adopted an ordinance authorizing a rights of way agreement between Comcast and Edison for cable and internet service.
Officials also asked residents to take a survey take a survey to help them gauge internet needs.
On Thursday, Joshi along with Comcast officials and residents celebrated the first 1,000 customers of the new service provider.
“I promised to end the internet monopoly in Edison and we did. Edison residents now have the freedom to choose their internet provider and negotiate,” Joshi said in a statement.
“Comcast is laying the highest technology Fiber optic cables and investing $80M+ in Edison. This comes after 2 years of hurdles including, but not limited to legal cases, attempts at changing the state law, myself having to testify at the state board of public utilities, two local law changes, and much more. Most importantly: we got it done.”
Meanwhile, construction continues to bring Comcast’s fast, fiber-rich network to all residents and businesses over the next few years.
