GameSir G7 Pro Review: Modular Excellence with a Minor Misstep

GameSir continues its impressive run of high-quality, feature-packed controllers with the G7 Pro, a versatile Xbox/PC pad that brings modularity and premium features to a competitive price point.

The GameSir G7 Pro: A Quick Take

The G7 Pro builds on GameSir’s established reputation, joining the Tarantula Pro and Kaleid in my personal hall of fame. This controller brings the expected GameSir excellence – Hall effect sticks for drift prevention, excellent trigger locks, and extensive remapping capabilities – while adding a compelling modular twist.

What sets this controller apart is its swappable components. Like high-end options such as the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded and Thrustmaster eSwap X2 H.E., the G7 Pro features interchangeable d-pad and stick top modules. While the additional stick tops are identical (essentially serving as spares), the face and grip plates are also swappable for cosmetic customization.

The build quality is exceptional throughout, with comfortable rubberized grips and a solid feel that would make me reach for this over the official Xbox controller daily. However, the face buttons represent a slight stumble – while using the same tactile micro switch technology found in other GameSir controllers, they feature an unusual halfway bump that creates a somewhat lumpy press feel. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s noticeably less refined than the clean presses on the GameSir Kaleid or competitors like the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.

Pricing and Availability

The standard G7 Pro retails for $79.99 / £89.99 (approximately AU$114), positioning it slightly above other GameSir models but justified by its additional modularity. Multiple colorways and special editions are available, including collaborations with Chinese game developers like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Zenless Zone Zero. The latter even includes a layered keychain. Prices vary for these special editions, and compatible face plates and stick tops can be purchased separately from GameSir’s website.

Design and Features

The G7 Pro follows the familiar Xbox controller silhouette – similar in size and weight to the official model – but elevates the design significantly. The swappable faceplates offer personality and customization at a fraction of the cost of Xbox’s Design Lab. The rubberized rear grips are among the most comfortable I’ve tested.

On the rear, you’ll find two remappable buttons with individual locking switches, trigger lock toggles, and a switch for toggling between Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connectivity. The front features an asymmetrical stick layout, d-pad, face buttons, Home and Share buttons, and a multifunction button for quick adjustments like headset volume and button remapping – accessible both on-device and through the GameSir Nexus app.

Performance

The G7 Pro delivers a near-luxurious gaming experience. The Hall effect sticks perform flawlessly, while the trigger locks offer one of the most tactile and responsive digital trigger options available. The micro switch-powered d-pad and rear buttons provide exceptional clicky responsiveness, making this an excellent choice for competitive gamers.

Battery life is solid at around 12 hours, with a charging dock included that can fully recharge the controller in approximately two hours.

Should You Buy It?

Buy it if:

  • You want a premium Xbox/PC controller with Hall effect sticks
  • Modular customization appeals to you
  • You’re a competitive gamer who values immediate, tactile feedback
  • You want features typically found in much more expensive controllers

Don’t buy it if:

  • You prefer the clean press feel of traditional face buttons
  • You need extensive customization options beyond what’s offered
  • You’re on a tight budget and can live without premium features

Also consider:

  • 8BitDo Ultimate 2 ($59.99 / £49.99): More affordable with excellent face buttons
  • GameSir Tarantula Pro ($69.99 / £69.99): Similar features with different ergonomics
  • Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded: Higher-end modular option with more customization

The GameSir G7 Pro represents exceptional value, bringing high-end features and modularity to a mid-range price point. While the face buttons prevent it from achieving perfection, it remains one of the best Xbox/PC controllers available today.
