Motorola Razr Fold: A New Contender in the Foldable Smartphone Arena

Motorola has officially unveiled its first book-style foldable smartphone, the Razr Fold, at MWC 2026, marking a significant milestone in the company’s mobile device lineup. Following a brief announcement at CES, the Razr Fold is now ready to compete with established players like Samsung and Google in the foldable market.

One of the standout features of the Razr Fold is its impressive display technology. Motorola has equipped both the main 8.1-inch foldable display and the external screen with exceptional brightness levels, surpassing many of its competitors. The main display boasts a peak brightness of 6200 nits, while the external screen reaches 6000 nits. This is a significant improvement over other foldables, such as the Pixel 10 Fold Pro, which has a peak brightness of 3000 nits on both screens. The high brightness levels ensure excellent visibility even in bright outdoor conditions, making the Razr Fold a versatile device for various lighting environments.

The main display is a 2K (2,484 x 2,232) LTPO panel with a peak refresh rate of 120Hz, while the external display offers a 2,520 x 1,080 resolution with a peak refresh rate of 165Hz. Both screens support Dolby Vision, enhancing the viewing experience with vibrant colors and improved contrast.

In terms of battery life, the Razr Fold is equipped with a silicon-carbon 6,000mAh battery, which is among the largest in the foldable smartphone category. This high-capacity battery is complemented by fast charging capabilities, supporting up to 80W with Motorola’s TurboPower charger and up to 50W wireless charging. The use of a silicon-carbon battery allows Motorola to maintain a slim profile for the device, with a thickness of just 4.6mm when open and 9.9mm when closed. This is particularly impressive given the large battery capacity, and it positions the Razr Fold as a competitive option in terms of both performance and design.

Under the hood, the Razr Fold is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, ensuring top-tier performance for demanding tasks and gaming. The device also features a liquid-cooling system to maintain optimal performance during extended use.

The camera system on the Razr Fold is another area where Motorola has made significant improvements. The device is equipped with a 50-megapixel main sensor with a f/1.6 lens and 3.5 degrees of optical image stabilization. It also includes a multi-spectral 3-in-1 light sensor to enhance color accuracy. The ultrawide camera features a 50-megapixel sensor with a 122-degree field of view and macro photography support. Additionally, the 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera offers up to 3x optical zoom and 100x SuperZoom, leveraging AI-boosted image processing for enhanced results. The Razr Fold also includes two selfie cameras: a 32-megapixel internal camera capable of recording 4K video and a 20-megapixel external selfie camera, both with a f/2.4 lens.

Motorola claims that the Razr Fold has the best camera system on any foldable smartphone, citing the highest DXOMARK score among foldables. DXOMARK is a reputable benchmarking website and lab that evaluates the image quality of smartphones, camera lenses, and cameras. While it remains to be seen how the Razr Fold’s camera performance compares to other leading foldables, initial impressions suggest that it could be a strong contender in this area.

The Razr Fold also introduces support for the Moto Pen Ultra stylus, a feature that could appeal to users who value productivity and creativity on their mobile devices. This addition, combined with the device’s high-performance hardware and versatile camera system, positions the Razr Fold as a well-rounded option in the foldable smartphone market.

Pricing and availability details for the Razr Fold have not yet been announced, but Motorola has confirmed that the device will be coming to North America in the coming months. As the foldable smartphone market continues to evolve, the Razr Fold represents Motorola’s ambitious entry into this space, offering a compelling combination of cutting-edge technology, innovative design, and practical features.
