Firefox Sets a New Standard: AI Features with a Real Choice

In the wake of ChatGPT’s explosive debut in 2022, the generative AI revolution has swept through Silicon Valley like wildfire. Suddenly, it feels like every tech company—from giants to startups—is scrambling to bolt AI capabilities onto their products. Sometimes these additions genuinely enhance the user experience; other times, they feel more like corporate box-ticking exercises, a way to signal that a company is “keeping up with the times.” In 2026, it’s almost a litmus test: can you even call yourself a tech company if you’re not all-in on AI?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with companies rolling out AI features—so long as they also offer users an easy way to disable them. Plenty of customers have no interest in AI cluttering their daily digital tools. Anecdotally, I know many who feel exactly that way. Give us an off switch, and we’re fine. The real problem arises when these features aren’t just offered—they’re made mandatory. Unfortunately, that’s the direction many companies seem to be heading.

This tension came to a head last year when Mozilla’s new CEO, Anthony Enzor-Demeo, announced that Firefox would “evolve into a modern AI browser.” An open letter from a concerned Redditor, critical of this direction, garnered over 5,000 upvotes on the Firefox subreddit. Users worried that AI features would compromise the browser’s simplicity and user autonomy. In a notable move, Enzor-Demeo himself responded to the thread, promising that Mozilla would provide “a clear way” to disable AI features—including a dedicated kill switch. It appears he meant what he said.

Firefox’s AI Features Are Easy to Opt Out Of

Earlier this month, Mozilla delivered on that promise, unveiling new AI controls in Firefox 148, released on February 24. The update introduces a brand-new “AI controls” section in the browser’s settings panel (nestled between “Sync” and “AI controls”). From here, users can block all current and future AI features, or selectively enable only those they want.

What AI Features Firefox Offers

Firefox 148 launches with five AI-powered features, each of which can be toggled on or off:

  • Translations: Automatically translate web pages into your preferred language.
  • Alt text in PDFs: Add accessibility descriptions to images embedded in PDFs.
  • AI-enhanced tab grouping: Suggest related tabs and group names for better organization.
  • Link previews: Show key points from a link before you click through.
  • AI chatbot providers in the sidebar: Firefox is introducing its own AI chatbot, but users can also choose from existing options like Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.

For those who want nothing to do with AI while browsing, the “Block AI enhancements” toggle is a game-changer. Once activated, not only do these features disappear, but Firefox also blocks any pop-ups or alerts trying to nudge you toward trying AI features—now or in the future.

Firefox users who are wary of AI should definitely explore this new controls menu after updating. While there are certainly more intrusive AI implementations out there, Firefox’s approach stands out for its respect for user choice. Features like translations and link previews can be genuinely useful, but I know I’d never want a chatbot permanently lurking in my browser’s sidebar. If I were a Firefox user, I’d likely disable at least that feature, if not all of them.

Mozilla’s move sets a new standard for transparency and user autonomy in the age of AI—proving that innovation and choice can go hand in hand.
