YouTuber Designs Cooling System for 1.5 kW LED, Creates Small Artificial Sun
In the realm of DIY tech innovation, YouTuber Matthew Perks of DIY Perks has just lit up the internet—literally. His latest project? A tennis-ball-sized LED array that blazes with a staggering 120,000 lumens, making it bright enough to rival parking lot floodlights. For context, your typical household bulb only pumps out about 1,000 lumens. This is not your average desk lamp—it’s a portable artificial sun.
At a cost of around $1,300, this LED beast draws up to 1.5 kW of power and generates an immense amount of heat. The challenge? Keeping it cool enough to run for extended periods without melting itself into oblivion. Perks’ solution? A custom-built, steampunk-inspired water-cooling system that’s as ingenious as it is visually striking.
The design centers around a hexagonal coolant reservoir that doubles as a heat sink for six voltage regulator boards. The LED itself is mounted on a custom water block, with coolant flowing through to six massive copper radiators, each cooled by a trio of PC fans. An Arduino monitors coolant flow and temperature, while a portable lithium battery powers the whole setup—along with some onboard electronics.
But the real showstopper comes when Perks attaches the focusing lenses. With just the first lens in place, the LED’s output is so intense it can ignite a match—using only visible light, since the LED emits virtually no infrared. It’s a jaw-dropping demonstration of raw luminous power.
After adding the second lens, Perks takes his creation into the forest, where it looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. The system performs flawlessly, keeping the LED within safe temperature limits. The only weak link? The battery, which lasts just 15 minutes and starts to heat up alarmingly. Still, for a home-built cooling rig, the results are nothing short of spectacular.
The project has even earned praise from YouTube’s own laser legend, Styropyro, who called it “an incredibly well done light!” If that’s not a glowing endorsement, what is?
This is more than just a tech build—it’s a testament to the creativity and engineering chops of the DIY community. Whether you’re a lighting enthusiast, a maker, or just someone who loves seeing the impossible made real, this project is pure inspiration.
