Finnish tire giant Nokian is preparing to launch the Hakkapeliitta 01, a snow tire with studs that deploy automatically when temperatures drop—no button-pushing required.

This innovation comes after 12 years of development by Nokian, a company that spun off from Nokia in 1988. The Hakkapeliitta 01 will debut later this year in North America and Europe, with a strong focus on Nordic countries where icy roads are a way of life.

Studded tires have long been a go-to solution for drivers battling snow and ice, offering superior grip and handling in treacherous conditions. But they come with drawbacks: on dry roads, those metal studs can make for a bumpy, noisy ride and even damage pavement. For drivers who dread the seasonal ritual of swapping tires, Nokian’s new design offers a game-changing alternative.

The Hakkapeliitta 01 features embedded metal studs, strategically oriented for maximum traction. But unlike traditional studded tires, these studs don’t require manual activation. Instead, the tire is engineered with multiple layers, one of which responds to temperature changes. When it’s cold, the material stiffens, pushing the studs outward. When it warms up, the material softens, and the studs retract below the tire’s surface.

It’s not a perfect system—there will still be times when the studs deploy in cold weather, even if there’s no ice or snow on the road. However, Nokian claims that compared to their Hakkapeliitta 10 tires, which have fixed studs, the Hakkapeliitta 01 reduces road wear by up to 30 percent while improving ice grip by up to 10 percent.

This blend of practicality and innovation could redefine winter driving, offering drivers the best of both worlds: the safety of studded tires when needed, and the comfort of stud-free tires when conditions allow. As Nokian prepares to roll out this groundbreaking product, it’s clear that the future of winter tires is here—and it’s smarter than ever.
