Bay Area-based Aetherflux to join Seattle space race with new hub for satellite development

Aetherflux, the ambitious Bay Area space startup founded by Robinhood billionaire Baiju Bhatt, is making a bold move by establishing a new satellite development hub in Seattle, signaling a major expansion in the Pacific Northwest’s thriving aerospace ecosystem. This strategic decision places Aetherflux at the heart of a rapidly growing network of space innovators, including industry giants like Blue Origin and SpaceX, as well as a host of nimble startups pushing the boundaries of satellite technology.

The company, which launched in 2024, is on a mission to revolutionize how we power artificial intelligence. Aetherflux’s flagship project, dubbed “Galactic Brain,” aims to deploy a constellation of solar-powered data center satellites in orbit. By harnessing the virtually limitless energy of the sun in space, the company hopes to bypass the energy and cooling constraints that plague Earth-based data centers. With AI’s insatiable appetite for compute power and electricity, Aetherflux’s approach could be a game-changer—placing “sunlight next to silicon” and skipping the terrestrial power grid entirely.

Baiju Bhatt, who co-founded Robinhood and now leads Aetherflux as CEO, has made it clear that the race for artificial general intelligence is, at its core, a race for energy. Traditional energy plans, he argues, simply won’t scale fast enough to meet the demands of next-generation AI. By moving data centers to space, Aetherflux envisions a future where AI can grow without the bottlenecks of land-based infrastructure.

The company’s Seattle expansion is more than just a new office—it’s a “core center for satellite development,” according to Aetherflux’s recent LinkedIn announcement. The startup is actively hiring across all disciplines, from engineering to operations, as it gears up for the next phase of its ambitious roadmap. The first commercial data center node is slated for launch in early 2027, with a $50 million Series A funding round—led by Index Ventures and Interlagos, and backed by heavyweights like Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, and NEA—providing the fuel for rapid growth.

Seattle’s reputation as a hotbed for aerospace innovation made it a natural choice for Aetherflux’s expansion. The region is already home to a robust ecosystem of space companies, from Blue Origin’s headquarters to Stoke Space’s rocket development, and from Aerojet Rocketdyne’s propulsion systems to Starfish Space’s satellite servicing solutions. Even SpaceX, with its massive satellite production facility in Redmond, is eyeing the Seattle area as a key node in its own satellite constellation strategy.

Aetherflux’s arrival is being welcomed by local players like Starcloud, a Redmond-based startup also working to put data center satellites in orbit. Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston took to LinkedIn to celebrate Aetherflux’s move, suggesting it could spark a new trend for space startups flocking to the Pacific Northwest. “Welcome to the neighborhood, Aetherflux!” Johnston wrote, hinting at the potential for collaboration and competition in this burgeoning sector.

The company’s vision has also caught the attention of the U.S. military. Aetherflux was recently awarded funding from the Department of Defense’s Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund to develop space solar power for military applications, underscoring the strategic importance of its technology.

As Aetherflux plants its flag in Seattle, the question on everyone’s mind is: how big will this hub become? While the company has yet to reveal the exact location or headcount, the expansion signals a major vote of confidence in the region’s talent pool and infrastructure. With its innovative approach to AI infrastructure and its growing list of high-profile backers, Aetherflux is poised to become a major player in the next frontier of space-based computing.

As the lines between space, energy, and AI continue to blur, Aetherflux’s Seattle move could mark the beginning of a new era—one where the sky is not the limit, but just the starting point.
