British defence tech outfit Mutable Tactics raises over $2M in pre-seed round

A British defence tech startup has secured $2.1 million in seed funding to advance its groundbreaking AI software that enhances drone deployment in combat environments where communications are disrupted. The investment round was led by spacetech investor Seraphim Space, with participation from the UK’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund, Koro, Entrepreneurs First, and Transpose.

Mutable Tactics is developing what it calls “decision-layer” AI software that operates between the human operator and the drone itself. This innovative approach enables defence forces to leverage multiple drones simultaneously as a coordinated team rather than as individually piloted platforms. The software translates a commander’s strategic instructions into actionable commands, allowing mixed fleets of drones to work together seamlessly.

The company addresses a critical limitation in current drone warfare: the one-operator-to-one-system paradigm that severely restricts the number of drones that can be effectively deployed at any given time. In modern battle environments where communications are frequently disrupted, drone systems that depend on constant human control quickly reach their operational limits.

Founded in 2024 by former British Army officer Colin MacLeod and robotics AI specialist Enrique Muñoz de Cote, Mutable Tactics aims to revolutionize how military forces coordinate unmanned systems. The startup plans to use the fresh capital to expand its engineering team in Cambridge and accelerate software development, while also validating its technology in collaboration with two European governments.

Colin MacLeod, CEO and co-founder of Mutable Tactics, explained the strategic importance of their technology: “Increasingly, the constraint is no longer hardware but human attention. We can deploy more drones than ever before, yet we still ask operators to control them one by one, often in environments where communications are unreliable. True autonomy breaks that one-to-one link, allowing humans to supervise and direct teams of systems rather than individual machines. That shift is essential for supporting modern military missions, where scale, speed and resilience matter, and where operators must remain focused on intent and outcomes rather than manual control.”

The investment represents a significant vote of confidence in Mutable Tactics’ approach to solving one of modern warfare’s most pressing challenges: maintaining operational effectiveness when traditional communication channels fail. As military conflicts increasingly involve electronic warfare and signal jamming, the ability to deploy autonomous drone teams that can operate without constant human oversight becomes not just advantageous but potentially decisive.

The startup’s technology sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics, and defence strategy, representing the kind of dual-use innovation that’s attracting growing interest from both commercial investors and government agencies.
