According to a recent survey by the Game Developers Conference (GDC), 33% of game developers now use generative AI in their work—a figure that has remained relatively stable since 2021. However, the sentiment surrounding its use has shifted dramatically, with more developers expressing concerns about its impact on the industry.

The survey, which polled over 2,300 game developers, reveals a growing divide. A staggering 52% of respondents believe generative AI is having a negative impact on the gaming industry, up from just 18% two years ago and 30% last year. In stark contrast, only 7% view AI as a positive force, down from 13% in the previous year. Research and brainstorming top the list at 81%, followed by office work like email responses (47%), coding assistance (47%), and prototyping (35%). This suggests that, for now, AI is more of a supportive tool than a creative powerhouse.

However, the debate over AI’s role in gaming is far from settled. Some developers are vocal in their opposition, describing generative AI as “built on theft and plagiarism” and a “regurgitated amalgamation of everything that’s come before.” One UK-based game design supervisor even declared, “I’d rather quit the industry than use generative AI.” Another US-based consultant joked, “Our standing rule is: If one of us brings up using GenAI in any of our work, then it’s safe to assume we’ve been assimilated by The Thing and should be burned alive by Kurt Russell.”

On the other hand, proponents of AI argue that it’s a valuable tool for productivity and accessibility. One developer noted, “I use [AI] to help me project manage. As a neurodivergent person, I struggle with segmenting big picture ideas into manageable small tasks. AI is great for those kinds of help.” Another went so far as to claim they are “intentionally working on a platform that will put all game devs out of work and allow kids to prompt and direct their own content.”

The debate over generative AI in gaming is a microcosm of the broader conversation about technology’s role in creative industries. While some see it as a revolutionary tool, others fear it could erode the very essence of human creativity. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the conversation around AI is far from over.
