Claude’s consumer growth surge continues after Pentagon deal debacle

Claude’s Rise: How a Stand for Ethics is Winning Users Away from ChatGPT

In a surprising twist of digital fate, Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, is experiencing explosive growth in both downloads and daily active users — and it all seems to be tied to a bold ethical stand that put the company at odds with the U.S. government.

Earlier this year, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to allow the Pentagon to use Claude for mass surveillance of American citizens or to power fully autonomous weapons. That principled refusal led the Department of Defense to label Anthropic a “supply chain risk,” a designation that could have spelled disaster for many companies. Instead, it appears to have sparked a wave of consumer support.

According to Appfigures, a mobile intelligence firm, Claude’s U.S. mobile app downloads have been outpacing ChatGPT’s for weeks. On March 2, Claude saw 149,000 daily downloads compared to ChatGPT’s 124,000. But downloads are only part of the story — active usage paints an even more compelling picture.

Similarweb, another market intelligence provider, reports that Claude’s daily active users on iOS and Android devices hit 11.3 million on March 2. That’s a staggering 183% increase since the start of the year, when usage was around 4 million, and a jump from 5 million at the beginning of February. This surge has propelled Claude ahead of other AI apps like Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot in daily active users, though it still trails far behind ChatGPT’s 250.5 million daily actives.

The timing is no coincidence. Claude’s usage spike began in late February, right as news broke about Anthropic’s tense negotiations with the Pentagon. If this momentum continues, Claude could climb even higher in the AI app rankings.

Web traffic tells a similar story. Claude’s website traffic grew 43% month-over-month in February and an eye-popping 297.7% year-over-year. Some of this growth appears to be coming at ChatGPT’s expense, which saw a 6.5% drop in web traffic during the same period. Google’s Gemini also saw modest growth, but at a slower pace than in previous months.

Anthropic has been celebrating Claude’s newfound popularity, revealing that the chatbot is now seeing more than 1 million sign-ups per day. Claude even hit the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store over the past weekend — a position it still holds — and ranks No. 1 in 15 other countries, including Canada, France, Germany, and the U.K.

The company says it has broken its own daily signup record every day since early last week in every country where Claude is available.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT’s app uninstalls have surged by 295% following reports of OpenAI’s controversial Department of Defense deal, according to earlier reports.

Anthropic declined to comment on third-party data but confirmed that daily active users have more than tripled since the beginning of 2026, and paid subscribers have doubled.

In a tech landscape often criticized for prioritizing profit over principles, Claude’s rise suggests that many users are willing to switch sides when a company stands firmly for ethical AI use. As the AI arms race heats up, this could be a pivotal moment — not just for Anthropic, but for the future of responsible technology.
