AI Agents Are Evolving—But the UI Layer Is Still Stuck in the Past

The world of agentic AI is moving at breakneck speed. Businesses are no longer relying on rigid, pre-programmed bots that follow static rules. Instead, they’re deploying intelligent agents capable of “thinking” on their feet, adapting to unforeseen circumstances, and dynamically charting new paths when conditions change. This shift is transforming industries, from customer service to financial operations, by enabling systems that can respond in real time to complex, evolving scenarios.

Take the financial sector as an example. By leveraging a business domain ontology like FIBO (Financial Industry Business Ontology), companies can ensure their AI agents operate within well-defined guardrails. Ontologies act as a shared “language” for business concepts—defining relationships between loans, parties, interest terms, covenants, and conditions—so agents don’t veer off into unwanted or non-compliant behavior. This structured approach keeps AI grounded in real-world business logic.

But here’s the catch: while agents have become dynamic and adaptive, the user interface (UI) layer remains stubbornly static. Traditional interfaces with fixed fields, rigid layouts, and pre-configured workflows are a bottleneck. They clash with the fluid, data-driven nature of modern AI agents, limiting the creative freedom these systems are designed to offer.

Enter AG-UI (Agent User Interface), a modern standard that streamlines communication between agents and user interfaces. While AG-UI is a step forward, it still requires screens to be pre-defined at design time. The real breakthrough comes with A2UI (Agent to User Interface), a newer technology that allows agents to dynamically render their own user screens based on the content they generate.

With A2UI, developers first define a UX schema—a blueprint for how UI components should be rendered. This loosely coupled schema empowers agents to build interfaces on the fly, tailored to the specific data they’re working with. Agents communicate with an A2UI-compliant “renderer” that dynamically constructs screens from JSON content produced by the agent. The result? Fully interactive, context-aware interfaces that can communicate back to the agent using AG-UI protocols.

Companies like Copilotkit are already building A2UI renderers that can transform JSON specifications into live, interactive UIs and wire them back to the originating agent. This creates a seamless feedback loop where the interface and the agent are in constant sync.

To make this even more efficient, newer compression standards like TOON (Token Object Notation) are being used to bundle schema definitions, ontologies, and A2UI specs into compact, context-rich prompts. As AI models grow smarter, they’ll increasingly be able to auto-generate A2UI-compliant screens through pre-training, further reducing the need for manual UI design.

The architecture behind this approach is elegant. A2UI focuses on rendering logic for UI components, while business ontologies define the underlying data structures and relationships. For example, in a loan approval workflow, the ontology defines concepts like loans, parties, and terms, while A2UI dictates how those concepts are visually presented to the user.

This separation of concerns means that when business rules or regulations change, you only need to update the A2UI specification—not thousands of individual screens. The system dynamically regenerates interfaces with fresh, compliant content every time. And because A2UI uses AG-UI under the hood, every screen maintains a live connection to its originating agent, enabling real-time interactions like button clicks and form submissions.

The end result is a unified experience within a single pane of glass—think of a traditional chatbot interface, but supercharged with dynamic, context-aware UI components. This approach ties together ontology, agents, A2UI JSON, dynamic content screens, and AG-UI message exchanges into a cohesive, business-driven deliverable.

The implications are profound. Reusable UI components are defined and built just once, then reused across countless workflows. Designers and developers are still essential, but their work is amplified by automation and standardization. For instance, you could configure a rule that all user-facing messages (errors, warnings, info) must be rendered inside a branded panel compliant with ISO 9241-110. An AI agent can then validate and construct these messages on screen in real time, ensuring consistency and compliance.

This pattern reduces dependency on static UI design and complements the dynamic nature of modern business. Imagine a company undergoing an acquisition and needing to update thousands of forms with a new logo. With A2UI, you simply update the specification and ontology, and the change propagates automatically wherever users access forms. This makes businesses more agile, resilient, and responsive to change.

Patterns like A2UI are not just technical upgrades—they’re strategic enablers. They free organizations from the constraints of legacy UI design, allowing them to harness the full potential of agentic AI. As AI continues to evolve, the ability to dynamically generate and adapt user interfaces will become a key competitive advantage, driving productivity, compliance, and innovation.
