FBI Investigates Breach That May Have Hit Its Wiretapping Tools

The FBI is probing a serious cybersecurity breach involving systems tied to wiretapping and surveillance warrant data, after abnormal activity logs raised red flags about potential unauthorized access to sensitive law enforcement information. The breach, which was first detected on February 17, has prompted the bureau to mobilize all available technical resources in response.

According to a statement from an FBI spokesperson, the agency “identified and addressed suspicious activities on FBI networks” and is leveraging every available capability to respond. However, the bureau has declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Notably, the Salt Typhoon group—a Chinese state-sponsored hacking collective—previously infiltrated wiretapping systems used by law enforcement agencies. Salt Typhoon gained notoriety for breaching major U.S. telecommunications firms and allegedly accessing information belonging to nearly every American.

The affected system, according to a notification sent to Congress, is unclassified but contains law enforcement-sensitive data. This includes returns from legal processes such as pen register and trap and trace surveillance, as well as personally identifiable information (PII) related to subjects of FBI investigations. The breach has raised alarms about the potential exposure of critical investigative data and the broader implications for national security.

The FBI’s swift detection and response highlight the growing challenges faced by U.S. law enforcement agencies in safeguarding their digital infrastructure.
