The ‘Buffy’ Revival Is No Longer Happening
Hulu Scraps “Buffy: New Sunnydale” Revival—Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Cancellation
In a shocking turn for fans of the supernatural drama genre, Hulu has officially pulled the plug on Buffy: New Sunnydale, the highly anticipated sequel series to the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The news was confirmed by none other than Sarah Michelle Gellar herself, who took to Instagram to share the bittersweet update with her millions of followers.
The announcement, which came as a surprise to many, marks the end of a project that had been in the works since February 2025. Gellar, who portrayed the titular character in the original series, expressed her gratitude to executive producer Chloé Zhao for the opportunity to revisit the iconic role. “Getting back into Buffy’s stylish, yet affordable boots” was a dream come true, she said, and the experience reminded her of the profound impact the character has had on fans worldwide. Despite the cancellation, Gellar emphasized that this doesn’t diminish the legacy of Buffy Summers. In a nod to her character’s enduring spirit, she signed off with the classic line, “If the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
New Sunnydale was set 25 years after the events of the original series and was poised to introduce a new generation of Slayers. The show was to feature Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Nova, the next in the Slayer line, alongside a fresh cast including Chase Sui Wonders and Ava Jean. Production on the pilot episode had taken place in August, with Zhao attached to direct. However, according to reports from Deadline, the pilot was deemed “not perfect,” and while a rework was considered, the decision was ultimately made to scrap the project entirely.
This cancellation is a significant blow to fans who have long hoped for a return to the Buffy universe. The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, has maintained a dedicated fanbase and continues to influence pop culture. The news of the revival’s demise comes at a time when other beloved franchises are also seeing new iterations. Fox’s X-Files is set to receive a new series from Ryan Coogler, while Firefly, another Joss Whedon creation, is reportedly getting a continuation of some kind.
Despite this setback, Hulu has not entirely closed the door on Buffy as a franchise. The streaming giant is reportedly interested in regrouping and exploring a new incarnation of the beloved series. This leaves the door open for future projects that could potentially capture the magic of the original while introducing new elements to keep the story fresh.
As the dust settles on this cancellation, fans are left to ponder what could have been. The Buffy universe is rich with potential, and while this particular iteration may not have come to fruition, the enduring appeal of the Slayer and her world ensures that the story is far from over. For now, fans can take solace in the knowledge that Buffy Summers, in all her strength and resilience, remains an indelible part of television history.
