Prime Video will restrict basic users to HD streaming
In a move that’s sure to send shockwaves through the streaming world, Amazon has announced a major restructuring of its Prime Video service—and it’s not great news for the more than 180 million Americans who rely on the platform for their entertainment fix. The e-commerce giant is shaking things up by locking 4K Ultra HD streaming behind a new, higher-cost tier, effectively charging customers an additional $4.99 per month to unlock the highest-resolution experience. For a company that has long prided itself on offering premium content at no extra cost, this shift marks a significant departure from its previous model.
Until now, Prime members—who pay either $14.99 per month or $139 per year—enjoyed the luxury of streaming in both 1080p HD and 4K/UHD without any additional fees. Those who wanted an ad-free experience could opt for a $3 per month upgrade, which was a relatively minor add-on for most users. However, under the new structure, the basic Prime Video package will now restrict users to 1080p streams, while the ad-free experience is being rebranded as “Ultra” and priced at $4.99 per month. This means that customers who want to enjoy the crisp, lifelike visuals of 4K content will need to dig deeper into their pockets.
But Amazon isn’t just raising prices without offering something in return. To sweeten the deal, the company is rolling out a host of new perks for Ultra members. These include an increased download capacity for offline viewing, jumping from 25 to 100 titles, support for Dolby Atmos audio and Dolby Vision picture, and an increase in the number of concurrent streams from a single account, from three to five. For cinephiles and tech enthusiasts, these upgrades could make the higher price tag more palatable.
It’s not all bad news for basic Prime members, though. They will also gain access to Dolby Vision support, which enhances the color and contrast of their viewing experience. Additionally, the number of concurrent streams they can access from a single account will increase from three to four, giving families and households more flexibility.
That said, it’s worth noting that true 4K streaming remains a luxury for many. Factors such as limited bandwidth and the lack of 4K-compatible devices—especially on smartphones and tablets—mean that a significant portion of Amazon’s user base may not even notice the change. For these customers, the new pricing structure may feel like a non-issue.
However, for those who have invested in high-end home theater setups and rely on Prime Video for their 4K content, the Ultra upgrade will likely feel like a necessity rather than an option. As streaming services continue to compete for dominance in the entertainment space, Amazon’s decision to introduce a premium tier for 4K streaming is a clear signal that the company is willing to prioritize profitability over customer satisfaction.
This move also raises questions about the future of streaming as a whole. With platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu already experimenting with tiered pricing models, Amazon’s decision could set a precedent for other services to follow suit. As the cost of producing and licensing high-quality content continues to rise, it seems inevitable that more companies will look for ways to offset these expenses by charging customers for premium features.
For now, Amazon Prime members will have to weigh the pros and cons of the new Ultra tier. While the additional perks are certainly appealing, the increased cost may be a tough pill to swallow for those who have grown accustomed to the all-inclusive nature of the service. As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the days of truly “free” premium content may be numbered.
