Nscale snaps up major US data centre site, inks AI compute deal with Microsoft
Nscale, the UK-based AI infrastructure startup backed by Nvidia, has made a bold leap into the US market with the acquisition of a sprawling 2,250-acre data centre site in West Virginia. The site, known as the Monarch Compute Campus, is owned by American Intelligence & Power Corporation, and the deal signals Nscale’s aggressive expansion plans as it seeks to meet the surging global demand for AI compute power.
This acquisition is not just another real estate purchase—it’s a strategic move that positions Nscale as a serious contender in the highly competitive US AI infrastructure landscape. The Monarch site is set to deliver two gigawatts of power by the first half of 2028, with plans to scale up to a staggering eight gigawatts by 2031. That’s enough energy to power millions of AI workloads, training massive models, and supporting the next generation of AI applications.
Josh Payne, CEO of Nscale, emphasized the significance of the move: “Nscale is a global company, and the US is the world’s largest AI infrastructure market. AI infrastructure needs to be built where demand is, and right now a significant share of that demand is in the United States. Monarch allows us to meet that demand. The acquisition builds on our existing US footprint and reflects the pace at which we are scaling to serve customers around the world.”
The deal didn’t come easily. According to The Information, both Amazon and Meta were also vying for the site, underscoring just how valuable such infrastructure has become in the AI arms race. Developing the Monarch site will require billions in financing, but Nscale’s recent $2 billion funding round—backed by heavyweights like Nvidia—puts it in a strong position to move quickly.
In fact, Nscale told investors that acquiring the Monarch campus could triple its near-term revenue projections. While the company hasn’t disclosed its current revenue figures, the scale of its ambitions is clear. The startup is already operating data centres in the UK and Norway, and has secured a high-profile contract with Microsoft valued at up to $14 billion to build AI data centres in Texas.
But the momentum doesn’t stop there. Nscale has also announced a landmark deal with Microsoft to rent 1.35 gigawatts of servers powered by Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips, starting in 2027 at the Monarch site. This partnership not only cements Nscale’s relationship with Microsoft but also aligns it with cutting-edge hardware that will be critical for future AI workloads.
Nscale’s global footprint is expanding rapidly. It is providing AI infrastructure for OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate projects in both Norway and the UK, further establishing itself as a key player in the AI infrastructure ecosystem. With the US now firmly in its sights, Nscale is positioning itself at the heart of the AI revolution, building the physical backbone that will power everything from large language models to autonomous systems.
The race for AI dominance is as much about compute power as it is about algorithms, and Nscale’s latest moves show it’s ready to compete at the highest level. As AI models grow ever larger and more complex, the need for scalable, reliable, and energy-efficient data centres will only intensify. Nscale’s bold bet on the Monarch site could well pay off as the demand for AI infrastructure continues to skyrocket.
In a world where compute is the new oil, Nscale is drilling deep—and the Monarch Compute Campus may just be the mother lode.
