Part Three trailer introduces Robert Pattinson’s villainous new character

The sands of Arrakis are shifting once again, and the spice must flow—because Dune: Part Three is officially on the horizon, and it’s arriving faster than a sandworm breaching the desert surface. Just two years after Dune: Part Two took over multiplexes and dominated the box office, director Denis Villeneuve is back with the next chapter in his epic sci-fi saga, and the first trailer has already sent the internet into a frenzy.

This time, the story is drawn from Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, a darker, more introspective tale that picks up years after the events of Dune: Part Two. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Villeneuve describes the tone of Part Three as a thriller—more action-packed, more tense, and more muscular than its predecessors. “If the first movie was contemplation, a boy exploring a new world, and the second one is a war movie, this one is a thriller,” he said. Expect a shift in pacing and tone, with a focus on political intrigue, betrayal, and the psychological toll of power.

The cast is returning in full force, with Timothée Chalamet reprising his role as Paul Atreides, now fully embracing his destiny as the enigmatic and controversial Muad’Dib. Zendaya is back as Chani, whose relationship with Paul is sure to be tested by the weight of his choices. Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the leader of the Fremen, while Anya Taylor-Joy, who made a brief but memorable appearance in Part Two, is set to play a more significant role. And then there’s Jason Momoa, whose character Duncan Idaho died in the first film—but as any Dune fan knows, death isn’t always the end in this universe.

One of the most intriguing additions to the cast is Robert Pattinson, who steps into the role of Scytale, a mysterious and manipulative antagonist. Pattinson’s Scytale is expected to be a more nuanced villain than the grotesque Baron Harkonnen, bringing a new layer of complexity to the story. “He should be a more nuanced villain,” Villeneuve hinted, promising a character who will challenge Paul in ways we haven’t seen before.

The trailer itself is a masterclass in building anticipation. It’s packed with stunning visuals, from the vast, desolate landscapes of Arrakis to the intricate designs of the Fremen’s sietches. The score, a haunting blend of Hans Zimmer’s signature style, underscores the tension and drama, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. And while the trailer doesn’t give away too much of the plot, it’s clear that Part Three will delve deeper into the consequences of Paul’s rise to power and the moral ambiguities of his leadership.

What’s perhaps most surprising is how quickly this film is coming together. Villeneuve had initially planned to take a break after Part Two to work on a smaller, more personal project. But, as he put it, he kept “waking in the middle of the night” with visions of Part Three. Clearly, the story of Paul Atreides and the desert planet of Arrakis was too compelling to leave unfinished.

And now, the wait is almost over. Dune: Part Three is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2023—yes, this year. That’s right, fans won’t have to wait long to see how Villeneuve and his team bring Dune Messiah to life. With its blend of epic scale, intimate character moments, and philosophical depth, Part Three promises to be a worthy continuation of one of the most ambitious sci-fi franchises of our time.

So mark your calendars, dust off your stillsuits, and prepare for another journey to Arrakis. The spice must flow, and so must the story of Dune.
