Editor’s Picks: Must-Have Gear With Your Member Coupon
During the REI Member Days sale, REI members get 20% off one full-price item with the coupon code MEMBER26. Here are some of our top recommendations for using that coupon wisely:
Upgrade Your Sleeping Experience
Therm-a-Rest NeoLoft Sleeping Pad – $250 ($50 off)
After extensive testing, I can confidently say this is the most comfortable sleeping pad I’ve ever used. The NeoLoft offers a plush, car-camping-like experience while still being suitable for backpacking. Its R-4.8 insulation keeps you warm down to freezing temperatures, and the pressure relief is exceptional. Pro tip: don’t overinflate for maximum comfort. The pad packs surprisingly small considering its impressive size when inflated.
Lighten Your Load With an Ultralight Tent
Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL Tent – $600 ($100 off)
This tent represents the pinnacle of lightweight, freestanding design. At just 2 pounds 10 ounces for the two-person model, it’s one of the lightest on the market while maintaining excellent stability in strong winds. The steep sidewalls maximize interior space, and the clever “awning” design makes entry and exit a breeze. All seams are taped with waterproof, solvent-free polyurethane tape, and the durable fabrics have proven to withstand years of trail abuse. I highly recommend adding the footprint ($80) for extra protection and the option to pitch just the fly.
Grab REI’s Best Lightweight Backpack
REI Co-op Flash Air 50 Pack – $299
I tested this pack extensively last summer as part of an upcoming ultralight backpack guide. It strikes an excellent balance between features and price, carrying a 25-pound load comfortably. Made from UHMWPE ripstop nylon with shaped steel piping for the frame, it’s sturdier than many frameless packs. The precurved back panel and hip belt offer exceptional comfort, and the minimalist design keeps weight down. My only complaint is that the exterior pocket isn’t very large.
Exclusive Member Deals on Camping and Backpacking Gear
Tents for Every Adventure
Nemo Equipment Mayfly Osmo Tent – $375 ($125 off)
This is my most frequently used two-person tent. It’s solidly built, cleverly designed, and has proven both durable and dry over years of testing. With a trail weight of 3 pounds 8 ounces, it’s slightly heavier than ultralight options but still very manageable when split between two people. The semi-freestanding design requires staking out the foot-end, but two sewn-in ridged stays ensure ample foot space. If you’re not extremely close with your hiking partner, consider the three-person model for $375 ($125 off) for more room.
Nemo Dragonfly Osmo Tent – $435 ($145 off)
For ultralight backpackers wanting a freestanding option, the Dragonfly Osmo is excellent. I’ve tested and loved the one-person version, which is spacious, lightweight, and sturdy. The proprietary Osmo fabric blend sheds rain better than most nylon rainflies. The three-person version is also on sale for $435 ($145 off), and the bikepacking-friendly two-person version with handlebar-compatible poles is available for $376 ($204 off).
REI Co-op Wonderland 6 Tent – $480 ($120 off)
This spacious, hoop-design family car camping tent replaces the beloved Kingdom 6. While I prefer the square design of the Base Camp 6, the Wonderland 6 is undeniably roomier and better ventilated. The biggest thing I miss is the interior divider wall, which made it easy to separate sleeping areas from hangout spaces. The four-person version is also on sale for $257 ($172 off), but I recommend the two-person version for considerably more living space at nearly the same price.
Sleeping Pads and Bags
Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sol – $45 ($15 off)
This classic closed-cell foam pad weighs next to nothing (10 ounces for the small) and folds up small enough to lash to any pack exterior. It’s incredibly versatile—use it as extra padding on cold nights, a chair, a table, or emergency insulation. While I’m too soft for minimalist trips relying solely on this pad, I always carry one for various uses.
Therm-a-Rest Comfort Plus – $170 ($30 off)
This self-inflating pad occupies an interesting space between car camping and backpacking pads. At 3 pounds, it’s not ultralight, but it offers exceptional comfort with enough padding for side sleepers to avoid bottoming out. The open-cell interior provides a nicely cushy sleeping experience.
Exped Ultra 7R Sleeping Pad – $260 ($65 off)
Formerly our top pick for backpacking sleeping pads, this is still an excellent winter option, especially at this price. The Ultra has down insulation inside to achieve its high R-rating. At under 2 pounds for the wide version, it’s not that heavy for a four-season pad, though it is quite bulky due to the down insulation. I’ve used this pad down to 20°F comfortably in a 10°F bag, and Exped rates it to -20°F.
Sea to Summit Ether Light XT – $220 ($55 off)
This 4-inch thick ultralight sleeping pad is the best option for side sleepers. I prefer its baffle design to the Therm-a-Rest X-Lite, and it seems slightly more durable in my testing. Note that this model has been replaced by a newer version, but this one remains excellent.
Nemo Forte 35 Sleeping Bag – $160 ($40 off)
This is our favorite synthetic sleeping bag, rated to 35°F (comfort rated), making it perfect for summer adventures. What I like most is the wider cut through the torso area down to the knees—it’s almost a hybrid between a mummy bag and a traditional rectangular sleeping bag. This bag is roomy and comfortable.
Outerwear and Apparel
Arc’teryx Beta SL Rain Jacket – $325 ($75 off)
This is our favorite rain jacket. Arc’teryx’s lightest rain shell has never failed to keep me dry. It features Gore-Tex’s latest ePE (expanded polyethylene) fabric innovation—a breathable, waterproof membrane that’s PFC-free. With a hydrostatic head rating of 28,000 (compared to the usual 10,000), it offers exceptional waterproofing. This deal helps offset the premium price.
Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Jacket – $149 ($50 off)
Patagonia’s classic rain jacket now features a PFC-free DWR finish. It’s 95% as good as the Arc’teryx Beta SL but costs less than half the price. Features include a two-way adjustable hood and velcro cuffs for a tight seal against rain. The only downside is it’s on the noisier side, but at this price, it’s a worthwhile compromise.
REI Co-op 650 Down Jacket – $80 ($20 off)
This is one of the most packable synthetic puffer jackets we’ve tested. If you’re avoiding down but want a light puffer for three-season backpacking or everyday wear, this is the jacket to get. Limited color selection available at this price.
Patagonia Down Sweater – $180 ($45 off)
This classic puffer jacket uses 800-fill-power down and borders on overstuffed, creating a beefier coat than many alternatives. It has excellent loft and the recycled nylon ripstop fabric still looks new years after purchase. The fabric is now made from recycled fishing nets.
Backpacks and Daypacks
Nemo Resolve Backpack – $170 ($43 off)
This great pack incorporates a low-waste footprint into its design, using solution-dyed fabrics and eschewing traditional straps and buckles for bungees and pull-tabs. While adjusting it is fussier, once dialed in, it’s not an issue. The Resolve is comfortable, feels structured despite being technically frameless, and sits high on your back. At 1 pound 15 ounces, it’s reasonably light.
REI Flash 22 Day Pack – $70 ($18 off)
Possibly the best-value day pack on the market, especially on sale. I was surprised by how comfortable this lightweight pack is, carrying loads up to 15 pounds without straining shoulders. The side stash pockets are fabulously large—big enough for a Nalgene bottle or rain jacket. Made of 70-denier recycled ripstop nylon, mine has held up well through rough canyon hikes in Utah. Note that this deal is only on print versions.
Mystery Ranch Flight 3 Pack – $250 ($50 off)
This is Mystery Ranch’s attempt at an ultralight pack. At 3 pounds 13 ounces, it’s not ultralight, but the full suspension system can handle loads far beyond what most ultralight packs can manage. It’s one of the most comfortable packs I’ve tested and my top pick for loads over 25 pounds. Unfortunately, Mystery Ranch has discontinued it, so this might be your last chance to snag one.
Camp Comfort
Nemo Stargaze Reclining Camp Chair – $180 ($45 off)
If you want to bring a chair backpacking, this is the one to get. At just 18 ounces, it’s among the lightest on the market and packs down small. Nemo solved the main problem with pole chairs by including a base pad that prevents sinking in soft ground.
Coolers and Accessories
Yeti Hopper Flip 8 Cooler – $175 ($44 off)
Like most Yeti sales, this applies to only one color—the insanely bright Firefly Yellow. I can almost guarantee you’ll never lose it in this color. The Hopper cooler is my go-to for afternoons at the beach. It’s just large enough for ice, drinks, and snacks for a family of five.
