Mozilla is making a big move to fix a problem that’s plagued the privacy world for years: free VPNs that quietly profit from your data. Starting March 24, Firefox 149 will roll out a built-in VPN that doesn’t ask you to install anything, sign up for another service, or worry about shady data practices. It’s baked right into the browser, runs quietly in the background, and aims to keep your browsing private without the usual tradeoffs.

The feature is launching first in the US, France, Germany, and the UK, with users getting 50GB of monthly data. That’s not enough to replace a full VPN for heavy streaming or constant use, but for everyday browsing—checking email, reading news, shopping—it should handle most needs without extra setup.

What makes this different? Most free VPNs make money by collecting and selling user data or injecting ads. Mozilla’s approach is different: because the VPN runs inside Firefox, your traffic never leaves Mozilla’s controlled environment. There’s no separate app, no third-party provider, and no mysterious data collection. It’s privacy by design, not by afterthought.

The VPN works by routing your browser traffic through a proxy, masking your IP address and location. It’s not a full VPN in the traditional sense—it only covers Firefox traffic, not other apps on your device—but for many people, that’s exactly what they need. It’s a simple, low-friction way to add a layer of privacy without the complexity of managing another service.

This isn’t just about the VPN. Firefox 149 also brings a suite of updates focused on making browsing more flexible and user-friendly. Split View lets you run two pages side by side in a single window—perfect for comparing products, reading while taking notes, or multitasking without constantly switching tabs. Tab Notes let you add simple reminders directly to tabs, so you can pick up where you left off without losing context.

There’s also a new optional AI feature called Smart Window. It can summarize pages, define terms, or compare products without leaving your tab. The key word here is optional—Mozilla isn’t forcing these tools on anyone. Everything is opt-in, keeping control in your hands.

Security gets a boost too. The update includes a Sanitizer API that blocks certain types of attacks before they reach you, and a visual refresh is coming with updated interface elements and a new mascot that hints at Firefox’s next phase.

So, is this the free VPN you’ve been waiting for? If you’re in a supported region and want a simple, no-fuss way to add privacy to your browsing, it’s worth trying. It won’t replace a paid VPN for power users, but for the rest of us, it’s a solid step forward. Just keep in mind the 50GB cap and regional limits at launch.
