Oman claims Israel pushed US into Iran war when deal was possible | US-Israel war on Iran
Title: Oman’s Foreign Minister Slams US as Israel’s Proxy in Middle East Conflict
In a scathing rebuke of American foreign policy, Oman’s top diplomat has accused the United States of losing control over its own decision-making and being manipulated by Israel into launching a catastrophic war with Iran. Badr Albusaidi, Oman’s foreign minister and key mediator in recent nuclear negotiations, delivered the explosive critique in a detailed essay published by The Economist, painting a damning picture of how diplomatic progress was derailed at the last minute by military aggression.
According to Albusaidi, the United States and Israel launched their coordinated strikes on Iran just hours after the most substantive round of nuclear talks concluded in Geneva in late February. These talks, which involved high-level American negotiators including Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, had reportedly brought both sides to the brink of a historic agreement. Sources familiar with the negotiations say Iran was prepared to make major concessions on uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief and the unfreezing of billions in frozen assets.
The Omani minister described the talks as “substantive” and claimed both parties were on the verge of a real deal. UK national security adviser Jonathan Powell, who attended the final stages of the negotiations, reportedly reached a similar conclusion—that a permanent, meaningful nuclear agreement was within reach and could have prevented the outbreak of hostilities.
Instead, Albusaidi writes, Israel’s leadership persuaded the Trump administration to join the war effort based on the false premise that Iran’s regime would collapse or surrender unconditionally following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The minister called this the “greatest miscalculation” by the American administration, warning that the conflict was never truly America’s war and that there is no plausible scenario where both Israel and the US achieve their stated objectives.
The war, which has now spread across the Middle East, has been described by Albusaidi as a “catastrophe” with devastating consequences for the Gulf region. He emphasized that neither side appears willing to return to negotiations, despite mounting civilian casualties and economic disruption. Oman, along with other Gulf states like the UAE and Qatar, had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to prevent the conflict, warning Trump administration officials of the potential for regional devastation.
Oman has distinguished itself among Gulf nations by increasingly speaking out against US actions, accusing Washington of serving as a proxy for Israeli interests rather than maintaining its traditional role as a neutral ally. In recent public statements, Albusaidi declared that the US-led military attacks on Iran were illegal under international law and represented a deliberate attempt to cause irreversible damage to the global legal order while helping Israel reshape the Middle East to its advantage.
The minister called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of bilateral negotiations, arguing that achieving Israel’s stated objectives would require a prolonged military campaign with American troops deployed on the ground—effectively opening a new front in the “forever wars” that President Trump had previously vowed to end.
As the conflict continues with no clear resolution in sight, Oman’s unusually frank criticism of its most important ally underscores the growing rift between Gulf states and Washington over Middle East policy, and raises serious questions about America’s ability to maintain its traditional leadership role in the region.
