Equinix begins building new Dublin data centre
Dublin, Ireland — In a bold move that underscores Ireland’s pivotal role in the global digital infrastructure landscape, Equinix, the world’s leading data center operator, has officially broken ground on a new $92 million data center in Dublin’s Blanchardstown district. Slated for completion and operational launch by 2028, the new facility—dubbed DB7x—marks a significant milestone in Equinix’s decade-long commitment to Ireland’s digital economy.
This latest development comes as part of Equinix’s aggressive expansion strategy in Ireland, where it already operates nine data centers, including two former BT sites acquired in 2025 for €59 million. With a global footprint spanning over 270 data centers across five continents, Equinix’s continued investment in Ireland is a testament to the country’s strategic importance as a digital hub for European and international enterprises.
What sets DB7x apart from conventional data center projects is its innovative approach to energy consumption. Equinix claims that the new facility will require “no additional grid power,” leveraging existing power allocations at the site to support its operations. This aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, particularly as data centers worldwide face increasing scrutiny over their environmental impact.
The facility will be built adjacent to Equinix’s existing data centers in Blanchardstown, ensuring “enhanced connectivity” and seamless integration with the company’s broader digital infrastructure platform. The $92 million investment is structured into two components: $78 million for the core data center build and an additional $14 million allocated for a retail International Business Exchange (IBX) buildout. The IBX offering is designed to provide enterprises with scalable, high-performance digital infrastructure tailored to meet the growing demands of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads and other data-intensive applications.
Equinix’s retail IBX data centers play a crucial role in supporting foreign direct investment (FDI) into Ireland. The company already provides infrastructure to over 200 FDI corporations, and the new DB7x facility is expected to further bolster this ecosystem by enabling both domestic and international enterprises to scale operations, innovate rapidly, and connect seamlessly across Equinix’s global network.
Peter Lantry, Managing Director of Equinix Ireland, hailed the project as a landmark achievement. “This is an exciting development for Equinix’s operations in Ireland, as we celebrate 10 years of being in Ireland, investing in its infrastructure and economy,” Lantry said. “This announcement strongly supports the Government’s recently published Digital and AI Strategy, which outlines a path for keeping Ireland at the forefront of global digital innovation. It also reaffirms our commitment to Ireland and its importance to businesses worldwide.”
Lantry further emphasized the broader economic implications of the project. “By expanding colocation capacity in Dublin, we will enable domestic and international enterprises to scale, innovate, and connect across Equinix’s global digital infrastructure platform with ease,” he added.
The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy, coming on the heels of Equinix’s recent creation of 200 new jobs in Louth through a new facility expected to cost the company as much as $700 million. These investments are set to benefit significantly from the Irish Government’s new strategy for large energy users, which aims to enhance hyperscale data center developments through improved state coordination and national infrastructure planning.
As Ireland continues to position itself as a leader in digital innovation and AI development, Equinix’s latest investment is a clear signal of confidence in the country’s future. With the global demand for data center capacity showing no signs of slowing, Dublin’s emergence as a key node in the digital economy is set to accelerate, driving economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement for years to come.
