Apple’s Clean Up Tool Can Fix Distractions in Your Photos
Apple’s Clean Up Tool: A Powerful New Way to Remove Distractions from Your Photos
Apple’s latest iOS and macOS updates bring a powerful new AI-powered tool to the Photos app: Clean Up. This innovative feature uses generative AI to analyze your photos and intelligently remove unwanted elements, filling in the gaps with realistic replacements. But how does it work, and what are its limitations? Let’s dive in.
How Clean Up Differs from Traditional Retouching Tools
Traditional photo editing tools typically work by copying nearby pixels to fill in the area you’re editing. This works well for simple tasks like removing dust spots or lens flares. However, Clean Up takes a different approach. It uses generative AI to analyze the entire scene and create a replacement based on what it knows about the environment, lighting, and textures. This allows it to handle more complex removals, such as people or objects in the background.
How to Use Clean Up
Using Clean Up is straightforward:
- Open a photo and tap the Edit button.
- Tap Clean Up. The first time you use the tool, Photos will need to download resources.
- Photos will analyze the image and highlight potential items for removal.
- Tap an item to remove it, or draw a circle around any item that isn’t highlighted.
- If the area isn’t cleaned fully on the first attempt, draw over the remaining areas.
- Tap Done when finished.
Safety Filter: A Clever Use of Clean Up
Clean Up also includes a Safety Filter feature that allows you to obscure someone’s identity in a photo. Simply draw a circle around their face, and Photos will apply a blocky mosaic pattern to replace it.
Where Clean Up Shines
Clean Up works best for:
- Small distractions like litter or dust
- Background textures like leaves or stone
- Lens flare (if not too large)
- Bystanders or vehicles in the background
- Areas with sparse detail
Where Clean Up Falls Short
Clean Up struggles with:
- Very large areas
- Busy areas with clearly defined features
- Removing people from recognizable landmarks
The Future of Clean Up
Clean Up is still in beta, and there’s room for improvement. The quality of the replaced areas can be inconsistent, and the user experience could be enhanced with more options and flexibility. However, Clean Up represents a significant step forward in AI-powered photo editing, and it’s exciting to see how it will evolve in future updates.
