“Imagine two massive hot zones in the mantle that create temperature differences so significant they alter the flow of liquid iron in the core,” explains Professor Andy Biggin, lead author of the study. “This isn’t just a minor effect—it’s a fundamental reshaping of how our planet’s protective magnetic shield operates.”

The Science Behind the Mystery

LLSVPs form irregular regions within the mantle where material is significantly hotter, denser, and chemically distinct from surrounding rock. What makes them particularly fascinating is the “ring” of cooler material that surrounds each one—areas where seismic waves travel faster, creating a stark contrast with the slow-moving waves through the hot zones.

The research team used supercomputers to run sophisticated simulations, comparing how Earth’s magnetic field should behave if the mantle were uniform versus how it actually behaves with these heterogeneous regions. The results were stunning: only the model incorporating the LLSVPs could accurately reproduce the magnetic field’s current irregularities, tilts, and patterns.

“The simulations revealed something remarkable,” Biggin notes. “Some parts of our magnetic field have remained relatively stable for hundreds of millions of years, while others have changed dramatically. The LLSPs explain this asymmetry perfectly.”

Why This Matters for Life on Earth

This discovery isn’t just academic curiosity—it has profound implications for understanding Earth’s history and future. The magnetic field protects us from solar winds that could strip away our atmosphere, making life as we know it impossible. Understanding what shapes this field helps us predict how it might change.

The findings also shed new light on ancient continental configurations, including the formation and breakup of supercontinents like Pangaea. They may help resolve long-standing questions in paleobiology, ancient climate studies, and even the formation of natural resources.

Perhaps most intriguingly, the research challenges a fundamental assumption in geophysics: that Earth’s magnetic field, when averaged over long periods, behaves like a perfect bar magnet aligned with the planet’s rotational axis. “Our findings suggest this may not quite be true,” Biggin admits. “The reality is far more complex and fascinating.”

What makes this discovery particularly exciting is how it connects Earth’s deep interior with surface phenomena. These structures, hidden since before the age of dinosaurs, have been influencing everything from navigation to radiation protection without us even knowing they existed.
