Santa Monica to Deploy AI-Powered Parking Enforcement to Crack Down on Bike Lane Violations
This spring, Santa Monica is set to become the first city in the United States to equip its municipal parking enforcement vehicles with artificial intelligence-powered cameras designed to detect and deter illegal parking in bike lanes. The initiative, launching in April, marks a significant expansion of Hayden AI’s enforcement technology, which has already been deployed on city buses in other parts of California.
The City of Santa Monica will install Hayden AI’s advanced scanning systems on seven parking enforcement vehicles as part of a broader effort to improve road safety for cyclists and streamline public transit operations. The cameras use computer vision to automatically identify vehicles parked illegally in designated bike lanes and bus zones, enabling faster and more accurate enforcement.
Charley Territo, chief growth officer at Hayden AI, emphasized the safety benefits of the technology. “The more we can reduce the amount of illegal parking, the safer we can make it for bike riders,” he told Ars Technica. By minimizing obstructions in bike lanes, the city aims to reduce the risk of collisions and create a more predictable and secure environment for cyclists.
Hayden AI’s bus-mounted cameras are already operational in Oakland and Sacramento, with additional installations in major cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. The company recently celebrated a milestone of 2,000 systems installed on buses worldwide, underscoring the growing adoption of AI-driven traffic enforcement tools.
In a 59-day pilot program conducted at the University of California, San Diego, Hayden AI’s technology detected over 1,100 parking violations, with a staggering 88 percent involving blocked bike lanes. These findings highlight the persistent problem of illegal parking and the potential impact of automated enforcement.
Beyond improving cyclist safety, Hayden AI’s technology also aims to enhance public transit efficiency. By reducing the number of times buses need to merge out of their lanes to avoid parked vehicles, the system helps minimize delays and lower the risk of accidents. “We do that by [reducing] one of the biggest causes of collisions with buses—moving out of their lanes,” Territo explained. “So the fewer times they have to make a turn, the fewer instances there are [of a crash].”
The deployment in Santa Monica represents a pioneering step in the use of AI for municipal parking enforcement. As cities across the country grapple with traffic congestion and safety concerns, automated solutions like Hayden AI’s offer a scalable and data-driven approach to urban mobility challenges.
