Apple AirPods Max 2 Review: The Long-Awaited Upgrade That Finally Delivers

Apple’s premium over-ear headphones have received their first major upgrade since launch, and it’s been a long time coming. The AirPods Max 2 brings feature parity with Apple’s latest earbuds while maintaining the iconic design that made the originals so distinctive.

Design: Unchanged Excellence

The AirPods Max 2 retain the same exquisite design that turned heads when they first launched. Those clean, unadorned rounded rectangles immediately identify them as Apple products, just like the company’s signature white earbuds did years ago.

What’s particularly impressive is the attention to detail. The ear pads showcase Apple’s incredible fabric knitting technology—an often overlooked aspect of their manufacturing prowess. Instead of printed “R” and “L” markings, Apple actually knitted these letters into the ear cups with a denser texture.

The polished stainless steel arms connecting the ear cups to the headband are both beautiful and functional, allowing for smooth adjustments without any awkward clicking. The headband itself features the softest rubber you’ll ever feel, with mesh netting that provides just the right amount of give.

Color Options: Subtle Sophistication

Available in the same five colors as before—midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange—the AirPods Max 2 sit comfortably in the middle of Apple’s color spectrum. They’re more vibrant than the barely-there MacBook Air but not as bold as the iPad 11. The purple option looks particularly striking, while the orange leans more peachy than the cosmic orange seen on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Comfort: A Mixed Bag

The ear pads remain the most comfortable I’ve ever experienced. Even with large ears and thick glasses, I can wear these for a full workday without discomfort. The rotating and swiveling design ensures a snug fit, and the thick, plush padding cushions around my glasses without pinching.

However, the weight is a legitimate concern. While it doesn’t cause neck pain thanks to the well-distributed mesh headband, the headphones do jostle around quite a bit when moving. Walking or running up stairs requires constant readjustment as they tend to slide backward.

Sound Quality: Simply Stunning

This is where the AirPods Max 2 truly shine. The audio quality is beyond excellent—it’s simply stunning across all genres. Whether you’re rocking out to rock, head-banging to pop, contemplating classical music, or listening to something more emotional, the clarity across the entire sound spectrum is unparalleled.

The sheer detail in tracks you’ve listened to hundreds of times will surprise you. And when you connect via USB-C for lossless audio? The experience is simply breathtaking.

Controls: Functional but Flawed

The Digital Crown and secondary button setup remains from the original model. The crown handles volume and media controls, while the button switches between listening modes and enters pairing mode.

However, the Digital Crown has some usability issues. It’s not immediately obvious which direction increases volume, and the clicking sound that indicates volume changes doesn’t vary in intensity, making it difficult to know which way you’re turning until you hear the results. The crown is also overly sensitive—a single 360-degree rotation can take you from mute to maximum volume.

Smart Features: Finally Catching Up

The inclusion of the H2 chip brings all the smart features found in AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 4. Adaptive audio has become my preferred mode, and the head gestures for responding to Siri are genuinely useful.

Active noise cancellation feels slightly more powerful than on the AirPods Pro 3, though Apple’s vague comparisons make it difficult to quantify exactly how much improvement there is. For maximum performance, you can wear both the AirPods Max 2 and AirPods Pro 3 simultaneously.

The Infamous Smart Case: Still Terrible

The Smart Case remains one of Apple’s most baffling design decisions. It’s barely a case at all—more of a floppy felt cover that only partially protects the headphones. The aluminum cans get a thin felt layer, but the delicate mesh headband remains completely exposed. The case doesn’t even cover the entire aluminum surface, leaving corners vulnerable.

The single-piece origami-like construction might impress manufacturing engineers, but for everyone else, it’s just strange. The edges where materials meet look frayed and feel sharp. For $549 headphones, this case is unacceptable. Consider purchasing a proper case from third-party manufacturers like Waterfield Designs.

The Verdict

The AirPods Max 2 deliver exceptional sound quality and finally bring feature parity with Apple’s other audio products. They’re comfortable for extended wear and maintain the iconic design that made the originals so distinctive.

However, Apple’s treatment of this product line raises concerns. Waiting three and a half years to update the H1 chip to H2, especially when H3 rumors are already circulating, doesn’t inspire confidence in the product’s longevity.
