Indie Gaming Roundup: February 2025

The indie gaming scene is buzzing with innovation, creativity, and some truly unexpected gems. From high-speed train tricks to sperm-based adventures, this month’s lineup proves that indie developers are pushing boundaries in ways that big studios can only dream of.

Steam Next Fest Highlights

Steam Next Fest is in full swing, running from February 23 through March 2, offering demos for hundreds of upcoming indie titles. One standout that deserves immediate attention is Denshattack!—a game that combines Tony Hawk Pro Skater-style tricks with high-speed Japanese trains. The result? Absolutely exhilarating gameplay that has already garnered significant buzz.

The Black History Month edition of the Black Voices in Gaming Showcase featured several notable titles, including Space Warlord Baby Trading Simulator, Aerial_Knight’s DropShot, and Relooted. These games showcase the diverse talent and creativity within the indie development community.

Games Worth Watching

Erased from solo developer Jerron Jacques is an open-world fighting game set in a cyberpunk world. What makes it particularly fascinating is Jacques’ hands-on approach—he even performed some of the parkour motion capture work himself, documenting the entire development process on social media.

Mouse: P.I. for Hire is a first-person shooter with rubber-hose animation that’s set to arrive on March 19. The game recently revealed one of its bosses, giving fans a tantalizing preview of what’s to come.

Gecko Gods, a Zelda-inspired adventure game, has been on many wishlists since 2022. The wait is almost over—it’s launching on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC on April 16.

New Releases

Under The Island is drawing comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and that’s high praise indeed. With protagonist Nia wielding a hockey stick as her weapon, this action RPG from Slime King Games has debuted to strong early reviews and is available now across multiple platforms for $20.

Demon Tides from Fabraz offers a 3D open-world platforming experience with paragliders, hookshots, and shapeshifting mechanics. The game also features a unique graffiti creation system that appears in other players’ games—a clever social touch.

Skate Bums brings 2D skateboarding to the Nintendo Switch, following novice skateboarder Lux as she takes on the Skate Bums gang. With its simple directional trick system and short run design, it’s perfect for quick gaming sessions.

Love Eternal is a psychological horror platformer that follows teenager Maya as she tries to escape the domain of a selfish god. The game features gravity-flipping mechanics and an atmospheric Iron Age castle setting. Available now across multiple platforms for $10.

Upcoming Titles

Woe Industries, known for You Have Billions Invested In Generative AI, is hosting the Adventure Game Aptitude Test (AGAT) on February 28. Participants will have four hours to complete an ’80s adventure game while being monitored to prevent walkthrough usage—a fascinating experiment in gaming skill assessment.

People of Note is a “musical narrative adventure” following pop singer Cadence on her quest for stardom. The game combines turn-based and rhythm-based combat elements, with options to disable features for accessibility. Launching April 7 for $25.

Titanium Court defies easy description—a surrealist roguelike strategy game with match-three, auto-battle, and tower defense elements. Despite (or perhaps because of) its complexity, it has already earned several IGF award nominations.

Become is perhaps the most unique concept on this list: a third-person adventure where you play as a single sperm on its journey. The game promises no explicit content but plenty of danger, upgradeable skills, and fashionable headgear for your microscopic protagonist.
