Apple Music will put custom tags for AI songs and visuals, but it’s not enough
Apple Music’s AI Transparency Tags Launch Amid Surge in Fraudulent AI-Generated Content
Apple Music has officially rolled out its new AI Transparency Tags system, marking a significant step in the ongoing battle against artificially generated music flooding streaming platforms. The feature, which launched on March 4, allows record labels to flag AI-generated content across four key categories: tracks, compositions, artwork, and music videos. When submitting content to Apple Music, labels can now check a box indicating whether AI generated a “material portion” of the recording or its accompanying packaging.
According to Apple’s partner newsletter, proper tagging represents the “first step toward giving the industry the data it needs for thoughtful policies.” However, there’s a glaring omission in this well-intentioned initiative: there is no enforcement mechanism whatsoever.
The Uncomfortable Timing: Deezer’s AI Fraud Crisis
The rollout comes at an awkward moment for the streaming industry. Just weeks before Apple’s announcement, Deezer revealed staggering statistics about AI-generated content on its platform. The French streaming service now receives more than 60,000 fully AI-generated tracks every single day—representing roughly 39% of all music delivered to the platform. Since early 2025, Deezer has detected over 13.4 million AI tracks total.
But the numbers get worse. Deezer found that up to 85% of all streams on AI-generated music in 2025 were fraudulent, a significant increase from 70% the previous year. These fraudulent streams get demonetized and removed from the royalty pool, but the damage is already done. For context, streaming fraud across Deezer’s entire catalog was just 8% last year.
As Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier bluntly stated: “We know that the majority of AI-music is uploaded to Deezer with the purpose of committing fraud.” This is the environment Apple is stepping into—asking people uploading fraudulent content to voluntarily label it honestly.
Why These Fraud Numbers Matter
Deezer’s data illuminates why streaming services are rushing to address AI music. The core issue is financial: bad actors are siphoning money out of the royalty pool. Generate 60,000 tracks in a day, run bots to stream them, and every fake stream represents money taken from human artists who actually create music.
Spotify is watching these developments closely. The company announced stronger AI rules last year and is working on industry-wide tagging standards. However, its detection infrastructure still lags behind Deezer’s. Like Apple, Spotify depends on what labels choose to disclose—essentially trusting the same entities that might be gaming the system.
The Detection Gap: Trust vs. Technology
While Apple is taking a trust-based approach, Deezer is betting on technology. The company is already licensing its detection technology to other companies, with French collecting society Sacem among the first to test the tool. Deezer claims its system can identify 100% of AI-generated music from popular models like Suno and Udio.
Apple, by contrast, is taking a different road entirely. Its transparency tags defer to labels and distributors to decide what counts as AI. The technical specification reveals that these tags are optional for now, and Apple’s system assumes content is human-created if no tag is provided.
What This Means for Listeners
For Apple Music users, the practical takeaway is straightforward: you’ll start seeing AI tags on songs, albums, and artist profiles soon. However, there’s a crucial caveat—the accuracy of these tags depends entirely on the honesty and diligence of record labels and distributors.
The irony isn’t lost on industry observers: Apple is essentially asking bad actors to self-report their own fraud. Without any verification mechanism or consequences for mislabeling, the system relies on an honor code that streaming fraud statistics suggest is already broken.
As the music industry grapples with the AI revolution, Apple’s approach represents a philosophical choice between trust and verification. While other platforms are investing in detection technology, Apple is betting that transparency through disclosure will be enough. Whether that bet pays off remains to be seen—but the stakes are clear: billions in streaming revenue and the future of human creativity in music hang in the balance.
