Apple’s 9 MacBook Neo is here: Is this the budget Mac you’ve been waiting for?

Apple has unveiled a new budget-friendly laptop that could shake up the entry-level PC market. The MacBook Neo, priced at $599, marks Apple’s first major push into the affordable laptop segment, directly targeting Chromebooks and budget Windows machines.

The device features Apple’s A18 processor—the same chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro—delivering solid performance for everyday tasks like web browsing, email, and media consumption. While it won’t handle intensive workloads like 8K video editing or running local AI models, the A18 provides enough power for the Neo’s intended use cases.

The MacBook Neo sports a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with 500 nits of brightness and a 2408 x 1506 resolution. It includes a 1080p FaceTime HD webcam and comes in three vibrant color options: lime green, yellow, and pink—a significant departure from Apple’s traditional monochrome MacBook lineup.

At 2.74 pounds, the Neo is designed for portability and everyday use. However, it does make some compromises compared to Apple’s higher-end models. The device lacks Thunderbolt support on its USB-C ports and uses Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6 instead of the more advanced connectivity options found in the new M5-powered MacBook Air and Pro models.

The timing of this release is particularly noteworthy. With RAM prices rising, growing concerns about planned obsolescence, and AI dominating tech discussions, Apple’s simplified approach with the Neo offers a refreshing alternative. The company is clearly positioning this as an accessible, everyday computing device rather than a powerhouse machine.

This launch comes alongside Apple’s announcement of new MacBook Air M5 and MacBook Pro/Pro Max models, which saw price increases ranging from $100 to $400. This strategic pricing creates a clear hierarchy within Apple’s laptop lineup, with the Neo serving as the entry point.

The colorful design represents a return to Apple’s roots of combining functionality with personality. While the iMac M4 introduced some playful color options, the MacBook lineup has remained largely conservative in its aesthetic choices for years. The Neo’s vibrant palette suggests Apple may be willing to experiment more with laptop designs in the future.

Pre-orders for the MacBook Neo are now open, with retail availability beginning March 11th. For consumers looking for an affordable Apple laptop that handles everyday tasks with ease, the Neo presents a compelling option that could finally give Apple a foothold in the budget laptop market.
