AV-Comparatives security survey 2026 shows most users had to buy new PCs for Windows 11

AV-Comparatives 2026 IT Security Survey Reveals Global Cybersecurity Habits, AI Adoption, and Windows 11 Upgrade Pressure

In a comprehensive deep-dive into the digital security habits of modern users, independent antivirus testing organization AV-Comparatives has released its 2026 IT Security Survey, gathering insights from 1,328 respondents across 87 countries. The annual report offers a revealing snapshot of how users protect themselves online, which platforms and tools they trust, and how emerging technologies like AI chatbots are shaping their digital lives.

The survey paints a global picture, with the United States contributing the largest share of responses, followed closely by Germany and China. Notably, 70 percent of participants described themselves as advanced or expert users—a critical detail that frames the data as representative of a technically savvy audience rather than casual consumers. This demographic skew suggests the findings may reflect higher-than-average awareness and adoption of cybersecurity tools and practices.

When it comes to desktop protection, the survey found that three-quarters of respondents pay for security software. This high adoption rate among advanced users underscores a growing recognition that free antivirus solutions may not offer the comprehensive protection needed in an increasingly complex threat landscape. Advanced users, in particular, were more likely to invest in premium features such as real-time threat detection, ransomware protection, and identity theft monitoring.

Operating system preferences also emerged as a key theme. While Windows remains dominant globally, the survey hints at a slow but steady diversification, with macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS gaining traction among security-conscious users. Browser choices followed a similar pattern, with Chrome leading but Firefox and Brave seeing increased adoption among privacy-focused respondents.

Mobile security is another area of focus. With smartphones now central to both personal and professional life, the survey found that over 60 percent of users employ dedicated mobile security apps, with features like app scanning, anti-theft, and secure browsing proving popular. Interestingly, advanced users were more likely to combine built-in OS protections with third-party solutions, reflecting a layered approach to mobile defense.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a fixture in the cybersecurity conversation. The survey explored user attitudes toward AI chatbots and virtual assistants, revealing a cautious but growing acceptance. While many appreciate the convenience of AI-driven threat analysis and automated customer support, concerns about data privacy and the accuracy of AI-generated advice persist. Advanced users, in particular, expressed a desire for transparency in how AI tools are trained and how their data is used.

One of the more striking findings relates to hardware upgrades. A significant portion of respondents reported being compelled to purchase new PCs specifically to meet the system requirements of Windows 11. This trend highlights the ongoing tension between software evolution and hardware accessibility, with security enhancements often coming at the cost of obsolescence for older machines.

The survey also delved into user concerns about emerging threats. Ransomware, phishing, and deepfake scams topped the list, with many respondents citing these as their primary motivators for investing in security software. Social engineering attacks, particularly those leveraging AI-generated content, were flagged as a growing worry, especially among advanced users who recognize the sophistication of modern scams.

In terms of regional differences, the survey uncovered some intriguing patterns. European respondents were more likely to prioritize privacy features and data protection, reflecting the influence of regulations like GDPR. Asian users, particularly in China and South Korea, showed a higher propensity for mobile security adoption, while North American participants were more inclined to invest in comprehensive, multi-device security suites.

The role of education and awareness also emerged as a recurring theme. Advanced users credited their security habits to ongoing learning, whether through professional experience, online courses, or participation in cybersecurity communities. This underscores the importance of accessible, up-to-date information in fostering a safer digital environment for all.

As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, AV-Comparatives’ 2026 survey offers both a benchmark and a roadmap. The high rate of paid security software adoption, the cautious embrace of AI, and the persistent challenges of hardware compatibility all point to a user base that is both empowered and, at times, overwhelmed by the pace of technological change.

Looking ahead, the survey suggests that the next frontier will be balancing innovation with accessibility—ensuring that advanced protections are available not just to the tech-savvy elite, but to every user navigating an increasingly complex digital world.
