BYD rolls out EV batteries with 5-minute ‘flash charging’ — but there’s a catch
Chinese automaker BYD has just unveiled what it’s calling a “revolutionary” battery breakthrough—one that could completely change the EV game. The new Blade Battery 2.0 system can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes, and reach full charge in under nine minutes total. That’s faster than most people can finish their morning coffee.
But here’s the catch: this lightning-fast charging only works with BYD’s new Flash Charging stations, which can deliver a staggering 1.5 megawatts of power. That’s more than four times the output of today’s fastest public chargers in the US and Europe.
The tech is debuting in the Yangwang U7, a luxury sedan with over 621 miles of range (on China’s optimistic CLTC test cycle—real-world range is closer to 400 miles). The battery uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which is cheaper than traditional nickel-based packs but typically offers less range. BYD’s solution? Make charging so fast that range anxiety becomes irrelevant.
BYD plans to install thousands of these ultra-fast chargers across China, complete with grid-scale batteries to handle the power demand. If this tech scales globally, it could give BYD a serious edge in the EV wars—especially as competitors like Tesla and other Chinese brands race to catch up.
