Carbonaide raises €3.7M to commercialise CO₂-curing and permanent carbon storage in concrete

Carbonaide Secures €3.7 Million to Turn Concrete Factories into Carbon Sinks

In a major leap toward decarbonizing the global construction industry, Finnish climate tech startup Carbonaide has secured €3.7 million in funding to accelerate its mission of transforming concrete production into a carbon-negative process. The investment marks a pivotal moment for the company, whose technology not only reduces emissions but also permanently stores carbon dioxide within concrete structures.

Carbonaide’s breakthrough lies in its innovative CO₂ curing and mineralization technology, which enables concrete to absorb and permanently lock in carbon dioxide during production. This process not only reduces the carbon footprint of concrete but also turns manufacturing facilities into active carbon sinks. Since launching commercial production in 2024, Carbonaide has demonstrated that sustainable concrete can be both scalable and profitable.

In 2025, the company signed landmark agreements with two Finnish industry leaders: Lakan Betoni, a prominent concrete producer, and Lipa-Betoni, a manufacturer of concrete elements. Both companies will integrate Carbonaide’s technology into their production lines, with operations set to begin in early 2026. This collaboration signals growing industry confidence in Carbonaide’s ability to deliver measurable environmental impact without compromising performance or cost-efficiency.

Adding to its momentum, Carbonaide made history in January 2026 by selling the world’s first certified carbon credits generated through its mineralization process. This milestone not only validates the company’s technology but also opens a new revenue stream that could incentivize wider adoption across the sector.

The funding round was led by Carbonaide’s existing investors—Vantaan Energia, Redstone, and Ihantola Invest—and welcomed new backers including Zero Carbon Future Group, Product Ecology Holding B.V., Helkama Kiinteistöt, and Ikorni Invest. The diverse group of investors underscores the broad appeal of Carbonaide’s solution, which bridges the gap between climate action and industrial innovation.

Panu Pasanen, CEO of One Click LCA and investor through Zero Carbon Future Group, expressed his enthusiasm: “With a lifetime focus on decarbonising construction, I am very excited by Carbonaide’s potential. Now that the technology is ready to scale, we are thrilled to support the growth of the company and also to partner with Carbonaide to supply carbon data for low-carbon products.”

The fresh capital will fuel Carbonaide’s international expansion and accelerate research and development into new applications. The company has outlined three strategic priorities for deploying the funds:

  • Global Customer Acquisition: Strengthening its sales organization and marketing efforts to bring carbon-negative concrete to markets worldwide.
  • Carbonaide Service Platform Development: Building a cloud-based software platform to manage CO₂ flow, carbon measurements, and carbon credit issuance—serving as the operational backbone of the solution.
  • R&D Beyond Precast Concrete: Fast-tracking development of next-generation CO₂ curing for concrete element production, with future applications in ready-mix and other concrete types.

Tapio Vehmas, CEO of Carbonaide, emphasized the significance of this moment: “With this momentum, we are well-positioned to scale our technology, expand our CO₂ partner network, and continue turning concrete factories into carbon sinks. There is clear demand in the construction industry for solutions that reduce emissions, showing that the industry is turning towards a low-carbon built environment.”

Concrete is one of the most widely used materials on Earth, responsible for approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions. By reimagining how concrete is produced, Carbonaide offers a tangible pathway to decarbonize one of the hardest-to-abate sectors. The company’s approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also aligns with tightening regulations and growing corporate commitments to sustainability.

As the construction industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, Carbonaide’s technology represents a rare convergence of climate benefit and commercial viability. With its technology proven and partnerships in place, the company is now poised to scale globally, turning one of the world’s biggest polluters into a powerful tool for carbon removal.
