The year 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. While Western automakers like Ford and Porsche are scaling back their EV ambitions, Chinese manufacturers are doubling down on innovation and pushing the boundaries of next-generation technology. Changan Automobile, one of China’s largest EV producers, is leading the charge by planning to trial solid-state EV batteries in electric cars this year. According to CarNewsChina, the company aims to equip vehicles with high-density batteries “before Q3 2026.”
Changan isn’t alone in this race. China’s GAC is also gearing up to trial solid-state batteries in its Hyptec electric SUV in 2026, with plans to deliver these vehicles by the end of the year. In Changan’s case, the company is targeting a deployment of solid-state battery cells in electric cars and robots. While technical details remain under wraps, Changan has claimed an impressive energy density of 400 Wh/kg and a per-charge mileage of 1,500 kilometers (roughly 900 miles). To put this into perspective, Tesla’s lithium-ion battery cells currently hover well below the 300 Wh/kg mark, with an average range of around 400 miles.
The significance of this leap cannot be overstated. Higher energy density translates to greater range without increasing the size of the battery pack. Since the battery pack constitutes the majority of an EV’s weight, reducing its mass while boosting range could revolutionize the industry. Solid-state batteries promise to solve this problem, offering more miles per charge and potentially reshaping the EV landscape.
Why Solid-State?
Solid-state batteries offer more than just energy density benefits. Unlike lithium-based batteries, which contain liquid electrolytes that pose fire risks, solid-state batteries are inherently safer. Nissan, which plans to launch cars with in-house all-solid-state batteries by 2028, highlights that these next-gen batteries are better suited for fast charging and eliminate thermal risks.
Additionally, solid-state batteries open the door to experimenting with newer, cheaper electrode materials without sacrificing density. A technical review by the University of California, Riverside, notes that solid-state batteries can reduce 0-80% charging times from 30-45 minutes to just 12 minutes. They also handle extreme temperatures better. For example, Chinese automaker Dongfeng has showcased a solid-state battery that retained up to 72% of its energy at minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit.
Despite these advantages, lithium-based batteries are unlikely to become obsolete overnight. With some chemical adjustments, they might remain relevant while solid-state batteries face challenges in rapid adoption. Scientists in China have reportedly developed a lithium-based battery with a different electrolyte that boosted energy density to 700 Wh/kg, nearly double the theoretical limit of regular lithium batteries. Chinese researchers have also tested a hybrid liquid-solid-state lithium battery that endured minus 29 degrees Fahrenheit while retaining 85% of its rated capacity.
The Road Ahead
The transition to solid-state batteries represents a significant step forward for the EV industry, but it’s not without hurdles. Manufacturing costs, scalability, and infrastructure readiness are all factors that could slow widespread adoption. However, with Chinese automakers like Changan and GAC leading the charge, the future of EVs looks increasingly solid—literally.
As the world watches, 2026 could mark the beginning of a new era in electric mobility, where solid-state batteries redefine what’s possible on the road. Whether it’s a 900-mile range or lightning-fast charging, the potential is undeniable. The race is on, and China is determined to cross the finish line first.
