At the heart of DG Matrix’s innovation is the Interport device, a compact power router that fundamentally changes how electricity flows through data centers. According to Subhashish Bhattacharya, co-founder and CTO of DG Matrix, one Interport can handle up to 2.4 megawatts of connections. This means it could simultaneously manage power from diverse sources—say, 600 kilowatts from solar panels and another 600 kilowatts from grid-scale batteries—to supply 12 server racks drawing 100 kilowatts each.

The implications are profound. Because Interport can integrate electricity from multiple sources seamlessly, DG Matrix claims it can eliminate the need for traditional uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and the extensive supporting infrastructure they require. This consolidation represents a paradigm shift in data center power architecture.

Space and Efficiency Gains That Matter

The physical footprint reduction is staggering. Where two four-by-30 foot skids laden with traditional power conversion equipment once stood, a single four-by-four foot Interport device can now do the job. Haroon Inam, co-founder and CEO of DG Matrix, emphasizes that this isn’t just about saving space—it’s about fundamentally improving system performance.

Traditional power conversion chains typically achieve 82% to 90% efficiency, but Interport pushes this to 95% to 98%. “When you are using only 10%, 15% of the components that legacy systems use, you’re going to be far more reliable,” Inam explains. Fewer components mean fewer points of failure, translating directly to improved uptime for mission-critical data center operations.

From Data Centers to Global Impact

Currently, data centers represent about 90% of DG Matrix’s pipeline, with the remainder focused on electric vehicle charging for fleets. However, the company’s ambitions extend far beyond these initial markets. The next frontier includes building power systems and creating micro- and mini-grids to support electrification projects in remote communities.

In these off-grid applications, Interports would orchestrate power from solar, wind, and battery storage to provide reliable, round-the-clock electricity without any connection to traditional power grids. “Nobody’s going to build a $100 million transmission line to a village,” Inam notes. “Now you can spend a fraction of that money and help eliminate energy poverty.”

Real-World Deployment and Future Products

DG Matrix is currently rolling out initial units to customers, with deployments beginning in June. The company isn’t stopping there—their next product will be a “sidecar” device specifically designed to supply power directly to data center racks, building on the core technology already proven in the Interport.

The company has also secured a significant partnership with Exowatt, the startup building solar-plus-storage containers to supply data centers with 24/7 renewable electricity. This collaboration demonstrates how solid-state transformers can integrate with renewable energy systems to create truly sustainable data center operations.
