Epic Games Cuts 1,000 Jobs, Including 82 in Bellevue, as Fortnite Engagement Drops

In a sweeping move that underscores the volatile nature of the gaming industry, Epic Games has announced a major workforce reduction, laying off 1,000 employees worldwide—approximately 20% of its total workforce. The Bellevue, Washington office, a key hub for the company, is among the hardest hit, with 82 employees receiving layoff notices, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing with Washington state regulators.

The layoffs come as Epic Games grapples with a noticeable decline in player engagement with its flagship title, Fortnite, a game that has dominated the battle royale genre for years. In a candid announcement, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney acknowledged the need for drastic measures to stabilize the company’s financial outlook. “This layoff, together with over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles, puts us in a more stable place,” Sweeney explained.

The company previously laid off 39 employees from this office in 2023, signaling ongoing adjustments to its operational strategy.

The Bellevue office is part of Epic’s broader footprint in the Seattle area, which includes its downtown Bellevue headquarters at Lincoln Square. In 2021, Epic further cemented its local presence by acquiring RAD Game Tools, a Kirkland-based codec creator, as part of its push to enhance its technological capabilities.

In his announcement, Sweeney painted a picture of an industry in flux, marked by “massive upheaval” but also “massive opportunity” for companies that can adapt and emerge as winners. “Market conditions today are the most extreme we’ve seen since those early days,” he wrote, highlighting the unpredictable landscape facing gaming giants.

Companies such as Amazon, Expedia, T-Mobile, Smartsheet, Atlassian, and MicroVision have also reduced their workforces this year. Many corporations are trimming headcount to address what some describe as pandemic-fueled corporate “bloat,” while also navigating economic uncertainty and the disruptive impact of AI tools.

The gaming industry, in particular, is feeling the pinch as companies reassess their strategies in light of changing consumer behaviors and economic pressures.
