The timing of these meetings is particularly troubling. Despite Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea for solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors, Thiel continued to arrange meetings with him well into 2017. The communications primarily concern scheduling lunches, calls, and meetings, with one email showing Thiel writing to Epstein on April 5, 2016: “What are you up to on Friday? Should we try for lunch?”

Adding another layer of intrigue, an undated audio recording between Epstein and former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak reveals Epstein discussing his relationship with Thiel. In the recording, Epstein describes the tech billionaire as someone who “jumps around and acts really strange, like he’s on drugs,” a characterization that Barak appears to agree with.

The financial connections run deeper than just personal meetings. According to The New York Times, Epstein invested $40 million in two funds managed by Thiel’s investment firm, Valar Ventures, in 2015 and 2016. The two continued communicating about potential meetings as recently as January 2019, just months before Epstein’s death by suicide in his prison cell.

The Epstein files have exposed a web of connections between the disgraced financier and some of the world’s most powerful tech figures. While Elon Musk and Bill Gates have also been mentioned in the documents, Thiel’s case is particularly striking given his public persona as a contrarian thinker and his outspoken views on various social and political issues.
