Remember when Apple removed the compact tab option in Safari? Yeah, we’re still salty about it. But macOS 26.4 brings it back — tucked under a new “Show more tabs” toggle in Safari’s settings. Combine that with the new tab grouping feature (finally!), and your browser window just got a lot less chaotic.

A tiny tweak with big impact: Trackpad tap-and-hold

This one’s for the trackpad crowd. Apple’s finally added an option to adjust how long you need to press and hold before a secondary click registers. If you’ve ever felt like you’re waiting an eternity for that menu to pop up, you can now tweak it to your liking. It’s a small change — but one that makes a surprisingly big difference in everyday use.

What’s not in this beta (and why that matters)

There’s no sign yet of Apple Intelligence features in this update, and no major under-the-hood changes either. That’s not necessarily a bad thing — it means Apple is focusing on polish, not piling on half-baked features. If the trend holds, we could see the final 26.4 release within the next couple of weeks.

Should you install it?

If you’re on the beta train, go ahead and update — these changes are stable enough to use daily. If you’re on the stable release channel, you might want to wait for the public rollout. Either way, this is one of those rare macOS updates that actually fixes annoyances you’ve been living with for years.

macOS 26.4 may not be flashy, but it’s the kind of update that proves Apple’s still listening — even if it takes them a while.
