FBI Warns of Impersonation Phishing Scam on Tron

FBI Issues Urgent Warning: Scammers Impersonate Agency Using Tron Token to Steal Personal Data

In a shocking new wave of crypto fraud, scammers have launched a sophisticated phishing attack targeting Tron blockchain users by impersonating the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The scheme involves a malicious token bearing the FBI’s official name and seal, designed to deceive unsuspecting users into believing they are under federal investigation.

According to the FBI’s New York office, victims receive an alarming on-chain message stating their wallet is “under investigation” and must undergo an immediate anti-money laundering (AML) verification process to avoid having their assets frozen. The message urges recipients to click on a link and complete a fraudulent verification form, which is nothing more than a trap to harvest sensitive personal and financial information.

This tactic mirrors classic phishing strategies that have plagued the cryptocurrency space for years, exploiting fear and urgency to manipulate victims. In 2024 alone, the FBI reported over 140,000 complaints related to crypto scams, with losses exceeding $9.3 billion—a staggering 66% increase from the previous year.

The FBI has urged Tron users to exercise extreme caution if they encounter this fake token and to avoid providing any identifying information to websites linked in the message. Those who may have already fallen victim are encouraged to file a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) immediately.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the FBI has engaged with blockchain technology in a controversial manner. In 2024, the agency created a so-called “trap token” named NexFundAI to catch fraudsters involved in market manipulation and pump-and-dump schemes. At least 18 individuals were charged after being lured into manipulating the token’s trading volume as part of the FBI’s sting operation.

This latest impersonation scam highlights the growing sophistication of crypto-related fraud and the urgent need for heightened awareness among blockchain users. As the digital asset space continues to evolve, so too do the tactics of bad actors seeking to exploit it.
