Fibionic secures €3M for lightweight bionic technology
Austrian DeepTech Startup fibionic Secures €3 Million to Revolutionize Lightweight Manufacturing with Nature-Inspired Innovation
In a major leap forward for sustainable engineering and advanced manufacturing, Austrian DeepTech startup fibionic has closed a €3 million seed financing round, led by Redstone, with participation from Euregio+, Caesar, Leap435, and a group of angel investors. This funding milestone marks a pivotal moment for the company as it scales its groundbreaking approach to composite manufacturing.
Lightweight materials have become a cornerstone of modern engineering, enabling breakthroughs in everything from high-performance sports equipment and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to robotics, industrial machinery, and next-generation mobility solutions. Yet, despite their widespread adoption, the manufacturing processes behind these materials often remain inefficient, resource-intensive, and difficult to automate.
fibionic is tackling these challenges head-on with its patented fibionic fiber placement (FFP) technology—a nature-inspired innovation that draws on bionic principles to revolutionize how composite materials are produced. By aligning fibers along actual load paths, the technology mimics the efficiency of natural structures such as dragonfly wings, creating components that are not only lighter and stronger but also more sustainable and cost-effective to produce.
According to fibionic, FFP achieves cycle times of up to one minute per component, setting a new standard for process optimization in composite manufacturing. This breakthrough enables the production of high-performance, stable components while significantly reducing material usage. The result? A manufacturing process that is faster, greener, and more economical, making lightweight engineering viable for large-scale production across industries such as automotive, sporting goods, aerospace, robotics, and defense.
Elias Hirschbichler, co-founder of fibionic, emphasized the transformative potential of the technology: “With fibionic, we are taking high-performance lightweight engineering to the next level. We enable the fast, sustainable, and cost-efficient production of extremely high-performing, ultra-light products.”
The company is already proving its technology’s real-world impact through a partnership with Selle Italia, a renowned Italian bicycle saddle manufacturer. Using the FFP process, fibionic has begun producing saddles at scale, optimizing for weight, stability, and material efficiency. Early results are impressive: the technology can reduce material use by up to 60% and lower product weight by up to 50%, delivering significant environmental and economic benefits.
With the fresh injection of capital, fibionic plans to accelerate its growth trajectory. The company will expand its industrial processes, further develop its proprietary technology platform, and scale its engineering and business development teams. Additionally, fibionic aims to advance pilot projects to full-scale production and strengthen its ecosystem across simulation, equipment, materials, licensing, and software tools.
This funding round not only validates fibionic’s innovative approach but also positions the company as a leader in the next wave of sustainable manufacturing. By combining cutting-edge technology with nature-inspired design, fibionic is poised to reshape industries that rely on lightweight, high-performance materials—ushering in a new era of efficiency, sustainability, and scalability.
